Balad is north of Baghdad, about a 30-40 min flight depending on airspeed and route. This is one of the birds that the Iraq's had actually buried in the sand around the base in an effort to hide them from the American Forces. It was put up on display and soon became a canvas for local artisans. These were worn by Iraqis who had received training from the US and were exiled or fled their country due to the brutal regime of Saddam Hussein. The people who wore these patches went in with the initial invasion of US soldiers and acted as stabilizers for the local populace. They helped rebuild the destroyed infrastructure.
