This was on Balad Air Base (aka LSA Anaconda). Balad is north of Baghdad, about a 30-40 min flight depending on airspeed and route. This is one of the birds that the Iraq's had actually buried in the sand around the base in an effort to hide them from the American Forces. It was put up on display and soon became a canvas for local artisans.

As you can see it's up on blocks and has been...well...it is what it is! lol

OK...for my second question/discussion topic of the day....I know SOF used commercial assault vests/gear but what about standard forces? do they use commercial clothing such as Popper or Tru-spec or the Rothco stuff?? I have heard that some groups did utilize this such as National Guard units...etc.. and if the US did this...what about other nations such as Italy & Germany....etc..because I know you can easily buy vegatato & tropentarn stuff from the Chinese/Hong Kong...commercial sellers

OK...what do people know about the use of protec helmets during OIF....I do know countries other than the US used/use them....Do special operators use them in actual combat?? I say that they DO use them...but the other method of thinking on this is that they use mich type helmets in actual combat for the ballsitic protection instead of the plastic protecs...any ideas/thoughts/photos????

I have found it extremely interesting to note how many countries have used the 3 colour desert camouflage pattern. While some countries used the actual U.S. issue sets & others used their own version of the pattern...such as The Netherlands. Now I have scoured the internet and found photos from many of the countries. While I am sure there are countries that have used this pattern that I have not found photos thus far....(I am still searching)...I am NOT including them in this topic until ...

This is a recent pick up of mine from the Ft. Campbell area. It is a Simmons scope that was a private purchase piece and used on a soldiers M-4 rifle. It is quite used, but is still in good working order. I recently bought a Piccatiny rail mount and some scope rings (not pictured). I found this in a surplus shop with a bunch of other used SF gear. It was cheap, so I bought it. If this piece could only talk.........

A picture of the two FIF patches in my collection. These were worn by Iraqis who had received training from the US and were exiled or fled their country due to the brutal regime of Saddam Hussein. The people who wore these patches went in with the initial invasion of US soldiers and acted as stabilizers for the local populace. They helped rebuild the destroyed infrastructure. These are from the first run of patches and were made in Germany.
