Sorry to bring this old thread back up. Just wondering how common these are? I just found a sealed set of British made MkIV chocolate chip nbc's. Dated 1991. I hear they were very few issued to US troops.

Not very common IMHO. I have one, but it's Iraqi contract made in Germany, so that doesn't count Very Happy

A couple quick pics...it is a trouser and smock set. Says DPM on the label, but very clearly choc chip.

My understanding is that the Brits consider all camouflage to be "DPM".

I wonder what the story is behind this. It is definitely British issue, not US and not for some other foreign contract. That's because the NATO country code is "99", and that's the UK. Plus, the US doesn't allow contract kit made outside of the US.

These hit the surplus market back in the early 2000s and there was always a question about who they were made for.  Story was that these were made for either Kuwait or Saudi Arabia or an undelivered contract for the US Government. However, that is only a story and I have no way of verifying that.  The contract date shows is 1990.  The package date is February 1991.  A little late to get to the US soldiers before Desert Storm ended IMHO.  However, it is possible.

I never saw one of these open before.  All the ones I have ever seen were sealed in the original plastic wrap.  These were selling for about $10 to $20 for a complete set years back.  I grabbed several sets, but sold all mine off except for the one I kept for my personal collection.

I would definitely hold on to them.

I doubt they were intended for US forces because a) they aren't made in the US and b) the stock number shows it to be UK. If the Brits did make it for an emergency US contract there would be US stock numbers because otherwise it would run into problems in the supply system. At least that's how I understand it.

If they were contract pieces for another country, I don't know why they would have NATO designations. I'll take a look at my Iraqi contract set when I have a chance, but I don't think there are NATO codes on it.

My *guess* is that the Brits ran shy of NBC material and got a bunch from the US because it was quicker. But the war ended before the contract was fulfilled and therefore the stuff was tossed into a warehouse or perhaps surplussed off to Kuwait or Saudi Arabia.

    Steve,
You may well be on to something with your theory.  IF I recall correctly, these 6 color chem suits showed up about the same time that the blue 6 color shirts that Camopedia says are Kuwaiti.
