A damaged Panzergrenadier badge. The national flag is supposed to be in the rectangle at the bottom. The beret color is correct, but the flecktarn sweat band is not supposed to be there. I've never seen anybody put that on before. There is a first for everything Smile

Berets and badges are all easily found and inexpensive. The beret is standard headwear for all branches of the BW.

Ah! Well, those little things do fall off sometimes so I wasn't surprised to see it "missing" Smile

A friend of mine has an identical one with the black leather band and an Edelweiss badge on the beret next to the tank badge. Did the Bundeswehr use the Edelweiss like in WW2 ?

Yup, the most certainly do use it. The wearing of the Edelweiss on the beret is technically against regs, but it is done. This beret would have come from Panzergrenadierbrigade 22 before the 1. GJ Division was reorganized:

I looked at my buddies again. It is a panzer beret not exactly like mine.

Could be that some Panzergrenadier really liked his old beret so when the sweat band wore out he had the units taylor replace the leather with some Flecktarn fabric or it could have been a tad too tight and he had it let out and rebound with camo fabric the options are endless.

about the flecktarn headband, They made a batch of berets where the headbands were a (kind of ) plastic, which wore off very quick and bad, in patches.

I assume that instead of buying a new beret, he had it repaired that way?
