Hard to tell what the trousers are, but the jacket is a hybrid Soviet Type I/Type II model.  It retained the provision for wearing equipment suspenders inside the jacket but has button epaulets.  The red collar tabs are probably incorrect as I've never seen anything like that on a Soviet or Russian field uniform before. I'm also suspicious that the snap at the bottom of the front was added by someone.

Is there a white printed stamp somewhere inside (usually lower left)? If there is you should be able to pull a date from it if it's readable. Two digits and I forget if it would be 89, 90, or something else.

If you're looking to trade or sell this, send me a PM as I just realized I've never bothered to get one of these before Wink

Thanks for the reply. I was told this was an Afganistan helicopter pilot uniform.

Definitely incorrect identification. The helicopter crew uniform has two slant zipper chest pockets and trousers with a map pocket on the thigh (allows you to read a map while flying).

    That's a weird one.

The jacket looks like a mutilated airborne model but the trousers with the metal D-rings and snaps for ankle adjustment look like proper aviation cut.

    Interesting mix.

Is the holster with attached lanyard normal?

The jacket is heavily modified . You can see where it has been altered inside. The only mark I can find is a white stamped number 28 by the right inside seam.

Could it be a modification of this style Russian Afghanka uniform from the 1980's

Good eye Raff!  I can't believe I saw the snap but not the added elastic gather on the sides!  You know, it looks like this was converted into a pilot's jacket.  Come to think of it, I think I saw one of these last year when pawing through a rack of Soviet/Russian uniforms.

Yes, the holster with lanyard is correct for this jacket. The number of buttons is not, so you'll probably note added button holes.

Here is a picture of what this jacket used to look like:

Yup, you found some nice pictures of the Type I uniform. The one I posted is the same type but the front is not buttoned Very Happy

Type II has buttoned epaulets and does not have the three "holes" around the waist. I think there are other differences, but those are the two that are easiest to spot. The "holes" allow the suspenders to be worn inside the jacket and poke out at those three points to attach to a belt worn externally. It wasn't a very practical design.
