Mystery Shoulder Boards Empty Mystery Shoulder Boards

Post by Wolverine Tue Dec 13, 2016 7:22 pm

A box of shoulder boards followed me home the other day. It included German (East and West), Chinese, Bulgarian, French, Kenyan, Barbadian, Antigua, and others. However, the ones shown here I cannot identify. Does anyone recognize some of them?

Some I know well! Top left is Nepalese (I think BG). The one below that is Czech or Slovak dress uniform. I don't know how to tell the difference between the two as they both based on the former Czechoslovakian ranks. The next three on the left are Estonian. The bottom most is for the dress uniform.

The right side is more of a mystery to me. The one with the hand woven stars looks very familiar, but I can't place it. The purple one isn't something I've seen before. The slide below that reminds me of Estonian field rank for desert uniforms, but the color and bar arrangement isn't familiar to me. Below that makes me think Communist era something. The black felt and braid style is similar to Romanian (Captain), but I'm not sure the artillery branch symbol matches up with that.

    That's all I got Wink

Steve, thanks - that puts a big dent in it.

Upon further search, it looks like the Czech example is for a lieutenant-colonel (Czech Republic), and the Estonian ones are kapten and nooremlietnant. Nepalese one is for a major.

You were right about the black felt one - it is Romanian, and the crossed cannons are examples of branch insignia worn because many different arms of service share the same background colour.

Thanks for the follow ups! I thought it was Romanian, but my quick search on their branch of service devices came up with conflicting information. So Romanian it is Very Happy

That is correct. Rank is podplukovník, OF-4.

The main difference is that Slovak stars unlike Czech don´t have the texture on them. Also Slovak ranks in means of number and placement of stars look almost like Czechoslovak. Czechs added more modern elements like 3 point stars for some officers.

I think the khaki colored one with the 4 yellow stripes could be a slovenian Colonel rank. But I'm not 100% sure, just a guess.

Ooo... Slovene!  I knew it looked familiar Smile  Yes, I'm sure that's it. But I don't know what uniform this would go to. Desert would seem the logical choice, but I don't think it is. Maybe it's for a part of the dress uniform? Maybe Slovene Navy has a khaki deck uniform?

I haven't been able to find any online Slovenian ranks that look like this one - could there be a Yugoslavian connection?

If it is Slovene, it would be for a Colonel:

I checked the other ex-Yugoslav rank systems and they've all diverged from the start point too much for this one to fit into the mix. Slovenia is the only one I found that seems to apply. Yet as far as I know the ranks for desert uniforms were on camouflage cloth and their navy doesn't use khaki uniforms.

The rank construction and size is most similar to Estonian, but they don't have a rank like that at all.

Thanks - can you tell me its particular significance? For a major I presume, but which branch? Air force? Band?

Very interesting - the pattern of the stripes at least does resemble the image above.

    Yup, I think that's right.

BTW, in my previous post I said the size was "right" for Estonian. Clearly that's not the case as it's much smaller than the ones to the left Very Happy However, Slovene rank slides are significantly smaller than Estonian, so I'd say the size looks right for a Slovene uniform of some sort.
