Ooooo... genuine issue!! Very nice. The set I have, and a few others also have, appear to be from the contractor producing uniforms for Seyntex without labels. This is the first item I've seen with the correct label in it.

Irish in the desert, thats a scary thought...I bet they have Water Buffaloes full of sunscreen!

OUTSTANDING set...Irish camo is rare to begin with, and this one is even rarer.

I just checked my trousers and all the details are the same EXCEPT mine lacks the right front waist pocket and some of the buttons are of the small Canadian type vs. the large ones seen on the genuine issue. The question I now have is if there's more than one version out there, including prototypes, or if mine is more commercial than I had hoped it was.

The trousers in the picture are of the "summer" variety. The field dressing is normally kept in a pocket on the smock, but during the summer when the smock isn't worn, it's kept in that front pocket.

Thats the theory but none of us do that as its waaay too uncomfortable. The FFD is usually taped onto the front of the battlevest on deployment in hot climates.New FFD's are the Israeli type and are too big to fit in that pocket anyway. Wink

Lucky blighter Smile All I have is the commercial set and no leads on the real deal.

What is the status of issue for the desert kit? Handed a set when you get on the outbound plane (so to speak) or is it a little more lax than that?

Issued by the clothing stores of whatever unit you belong too.The stores guys order it down from central stores in the DFTC (Defence forces training centre)in the Curragh camp.
Only a couple of hundred sets of Desert kit are ordered every three years(life of clothing contracts here) as the kit is only issued at present to our small mission with ISAF in Kabul and UN officer observers in the middle east. All current issue kit is now also available in IP-DDPM except web equipment and PPE covers. Those are still in normal IP-DPM.

All our Combat uniforms use the large type "Canadian" buttons as standard on the Smock and trousers. The only smaller type slotted buttons found on either of those garments are on the Field dressing pockets. The shirt uses the smaller buttons as standard.

That's correct. For our Chad mission the troops wore normal temperate IP-DPM with desert boots Rolling Eyes .We don't have troops in Sudan. Our Troops with EUTM in Uganda wear temperate IP-DPM also.

Our kit in general isn't bad and is definetly streets ahead of the kit I was issued when I first joined up.Nice find on the IP-DDPM kit. They are rare.Even rarer is the 2010 pattern version which is only now coming on stream.

Congrats on getting your shirt and a smock on top of that! I just received a smock and it is a brilliant piece of kit, for sure.

The smock I have appears to have a small Irish flag on the sleeve, but black velcro stitched over it the size of the larger flag as seen in the above pics. Anybody know what the story is there?

Totally different material(Ripstop polycotton similar to the Tropical PCS LW Jacket)diffent pocket design.Large tricolour as standard and "Defence Forces Ireland " tab over the left chest pocket.

Alot of lad used to sew velcro on over the small tricolour as since 2008 we had gone back to wearing the large version overseas as a force protection measure. This led to lads having to remove the large version on return home as the kit came with the small version fitted in factory. We have now standardised this and all out shirts etc now have the large tricolour factory attached as standard.

I posted pictures of as much of the new kit i have been issued in a thread here already.Only have pictures of those items in IP-DPM though as they are only slowly coming on stream in IP-DDPM from this year.If you check out the Defence Forces official Facebook/Flickr pages you will come across pictures of some of the lads wearing the new pattern kit. Also the official ISAF Flickr page had pictures of the Irish contingent in Kabul being presented the shamrock on St.Patricks day this year. They were all wearing IP-DDPM.(no the new stuff though).
