EBAY bidding

Maybe we should open an internal thread where everyone posts the auctions they are bidding in order to avoid such situations.

I think it's just as well not too. WIth the blind bidding process ebay instituted now, we don't know if we're bidding against someone we know, so we don't have to feel guilty about "stealing something away" from friends. ONe of the few changes ebay made that's a good thing IMHO!

This is not directed at anyone in particular, This is just my thoughts on the idea posed above.
My opinion on the matter is that it is a bad idea. Just like the thread we have down in the for sale section called "ebay finds", Let's say that I am watching or bidding on a Latvian desert uniform & someone posts the auction, then I have just gotten 191 potential competitors...in addition to the ones already watching or bidding...and ALL it results in is HIGHER prices for everyone including the winner...which I don't like as I am sure you guys don't appreciate either. While I understand wanting to "help" fellow forum members, it also can potentially screw things up for someone who is actually wanting it. It can make the difference in paying $30 for something that noone paid attention to, to paying $80 or more because it alerted other collectors looking for the particular item.

and as several of us have found out over the years that just because you have a non-bidding agreement with someone else does NOT mean that they will not use another account to bid on that item. I have personally had this happen to me well over 10 times, by the same person. It is definately NOT honest or fun. Also we have lots of guests visiting this forum each & everyday and then they would possibly be able to see the thread and then it gives the "guests" chances to go after the item too.

Another example, if a particular desert uniform pops up on ebay that I don't own, rest assured I will be your competition, I have both outbid & been outbid by many members on this forum, but that is OK...it is healthy competition, One thing to remember is that ebay ultimately comes down to who finds the item, who is on when it ends & who can pay the most for it.

I personally have NO problems if any of our members want to enter into non bidding agreements with each other, BUT our forum as a whole will NOT intervene or have generalized non-bidding agreements between members.

Yeah, I agree. I want to keep anything I bid on below the radar to keep the price as low as possible. I don't mind giving up my ebay name though since I sell militaria there from time to time. Some other forums do this just so we know who is who.

The new eBay system stinks in some ways (I liked knowing when I was up against a nemesis and I think it SUCKS you can't see who won), however it does fix the problem of butting heads with friends. It was such a nightmare trying to sort that out before especially since some (myself include) would plop down "awe, what the heck" bids without any intent on getting serious. A friend would come along, see that someone he knew was bidding, and be hesitant to bid against him. Then he sees the item he's always wanted go to some unknown person for $.50 over the insultingly low bid of his buddy. Not to mention spotting something minutes before the auction was up and not being able to get a hold of a buddy to see if he was serious about it or not.

So on the whole I think the new eBay rules benefit us all and we shouldn't try and reintroduce the complications that existed before.

As for posting auctions here, well... I have mixed feelings. I've definitely jumped on a few I wouldn't have seen otherwise, so on the one hand I like it. On the other hand I also think it would stink to have an auction all to myself on an obscure part of eBay Tajikistan (just kidding!) and then suddenly have a couple hundred dedicated collectors suddenly made aware of it because of a single post. On balance I think posting auctions here, other than pointing out crack smoking sellers, is probably not in our collective best interests.

Well said Arch and Steven. Posting here what you're bidding on would be useless because you won't even see who's bidding against you and there is no assurance that collectors who have an "agreement" with you won't bid against you either. Besides, Ebay is now really a battle of deep pockets. It's an auction and the guy who has the most money, wins. I agree with Panzerwerk and if he does go against me on something and wins it I won't have ill feelings towards him because he played it fair and square and at the end of the auction and sees that he won it I can only say "Good win!".

I wasn't aware that this sentence would steer such a discussion.
It wasn't my intention to force anyone into a non-bidding agreement. And I also guess B_2_Z isn't mad at me (well I hope so) for out bidding him.
