    Post by Camo_fiend Mon Mar 08, 2010 5:51 pm

Even though I collect mostly newer stuff, I do have some "oldies". lol!
I just wish I had the room to implement it into a display...

It's a great target rifle and I love shooting it.

    Hope everyone enjoys it nonetheless.

M1 Carbine with standard 15-round magazine. Manufactured by IBM Corporation. For PERSEC reasons, I have blurred the serial numbers.

Gary, if you could get one of these, it'd look right at home with all those M1 helmets!

Swag, it'd be very hard to part with this rifle, it was actually my first-ever weapon also. Laughing

Thanks... I agree, the M1 Carbine is too much fun to shoot. I guess that's why I like it so much! Laughing

Very nice! We've got one that's a Frankensteins creation, made from spare parts after the war. All of the parts are GI except for the receiver. Most of the parts are Underwood, including the stock. Do you have a bayonet for your's?

No bayonet, all I have are the sling, the rifle & 15-rd magazine. Still one of my favourites, though!

From what I understand and everyone I talked to they said it may as well have been a toy with what little power it had.

    Andrew,

Very nice! We've got one that's a Frankensteins creation, made from spare parts after the war.

I always thought that a lot of the mixed parts was simply due to production bottlenecks during the war. If Factory A had 1000 extra barrels and Factory B had nothing to do until they got barrels, they built on Factory A's barrels.

The Carbine was a very good weapon for what it was intended to be... a replacement for the pistol formerly assigned to various crew positions (drivers, weapons handlers, etc.). The same arguments about mobility vs. firepower exist today with the debates between 5.56 and 7.62 weapons. Personally, if I were going in for close fighting I'd take the Carbine with a 10 or 30 round clip any day of the week based on what I've seen veterans talk about in close in terrain fighting. I would just be careful to not get caught out in the open Very Happy

I think my Carbine is a combo of Underwood and IBM parts too.

It's very common to find mixed parts.. Even on wartime ones. Not only were some parts from other places used when needed, but the units that repaired battle damaged equiptmet used to strip 'em down, then build as many carbines as they had parts for. Save the extras, and do it all again later. My M2 started life as a normal M1 but got a round bolt, a new stock, a bayonet lug and a Winchester made rear adjustable site. My M1A1 has a few non-Inland parts too. The one I'm building is gettin whatever I find cheap for it. It's gonna be a blank adapted beater tho. The barrel I have for it isn't to great, but it'd still live fire, just with even less accuracy than before..LOL

    Fins..

Makes sense to me. And I forgot about field rebuilds. That's a pretty standard thing across all weapons, vehicles, etc. that were issued and then surplussed. Soldiers only care if something works, not if numbers or manufacturers match Smile

I had an M2 Carbine 50+ yrs ago. I wasn't impressed with the rate of fire and sold it. In those days not much info was available. I think the problem was a weak operating spring, but?
I always thought the Carbine was a fun plinker (so is the SKS now days), But I'd Never take it into a serious fight unless Nothing else was available! I shot a Coyote one afternoon - 3 times - and he got away from me. I knocked him down twice, the first time with a shot to the chest at about 75 yds.
Here are some of my Carbines - 2 Inlands, 2 Winchesters and a Nat'l Postal Meter. The pistol is a 1911 US Navy.

Long before my M1 was given to me by my grandfather, he loaned it to a friend to use on a deer hunting trip. The guy saw a good-sized deer about 80 yards out and he shot it with the Carbine. And he shot it, and he kept on shooting it. It just kept on going!
12 rounds and a lengthy blood trail later they found it (finally dead) but it looked like a block of Swiss cheese. lol!
I agree, it's best as a plinker or smaller varmint gun.
