    Hi Ben.

That's really cool, I've got one of these in my collection ,great piece of Brit Kit,and a much improved design over the old Mk 5,tin pot with the lift the dot, removable liner.

I wore one of these for a bit myself, the leather pads fore and aft, were well sweaty in use,and when running the lid would shift about a bit....nice too see one on this forum though Cool

Thanks. I had been looking for one just about since I took up an interest in British gear in late 2008, but could never find a US-based seller with one.

Then, back in May, I just happened to get lucky one afternoon on eBay and saw this listing from a seller in Ohio and made an offer (fortunately, he accepted) and it's been happily in my collection ever since! Smile

It probably is one of my favourite pieces overall. I think the elastic straps on the cover are nifty.

Hi Ben nice lid, looks to be in very nice condition too for the age (early Mk6) has that got the smooth painted surface?
    Cheers

GR: under the cover, the helmet has some scuffs and scratches, but I can make out that the finish is smooth, with an olive green(ish) colour, but I don't know if that's been painted like that or if it's the original finish.

That would be original Ben, very unusual if it had been painted, thearly Mk6 was smooth with later ones being rough but the same colour green.

    Good to know, thanks!

But the one aspect of the helmet that has puzzled me since I got it are those 2 little rubber "bumpers" on the back of the helmet towards the top...what purpose do they serve?

Oh them yeah they hold the hard black plastic helmet liner in place the thing with the leather pads attached think theyre called "Mushrooms" they sometimes break and need to be replaced by the Colour Boy (Colour Serjeant) in the stores.

MK6 Helmet with Woodland Cover Empty (Attempted) Scrimmed MK6

    Post by Camo_fiend Tue Aug 03, 2010 2:24 pm

My attempt at adding scrim for display... I have mixed emotions on this one; I don't think it looks too bad, but I'd really like the look of the rubber band approach better, if only I could one that wasn't astronomical to ship to the US...

I may just bite the bullet and try to get a scrim kit off eBay if I get tired of looking at the wrinkles in the gaffer tape. Laughing

    Hi Ben.

Mate you did a good job,I like the outcome, maybe add a bit of dirt or something,to the tape,it will lose it's shine, and the wrinkles won't look so bad....funny enough that's what I plan to do with my MK6 tonight.....if it looks naff....I might go down the innertube route though....look's like sqauddie approach to camo'ing up his lid...nice one Smile Cool

Gary, you're going to get a kick out of this... but right after I posted those photos I took the tape off and called the tire repair shop downtown and asked if they had spare innertubes, and I was able to go down and pick one up free of charge. So then I came back and after some cutting, stretching, pushing and pulling, I finally got it set up. I swung by the army surplus store and picked up a helmet band/cat's eyes also.

    Hi Ben,
The innertube does look a lot more authentic, rather than the gaffer tape, esecially with the cats eyes. Most impressive Cool

Looks like we were on a joint trans-atlantic mission yesterday Laughing

Here's my latest go at creating the look,on these Mk 6'sMK6 Helmet with Woodland Cover Dsc01723MK6 Helmet with Woodland Cover Dsc01724

I used a mountain bike innertube, and had to tie it up in a knot at the back,so it's got this kind of "pony tail" thing, going on at the back.....kinda unique....but not authentic lol!

    Cheers Mate.

Thanks, I was actually impressed it turned out as well as it did. That's the 2nd band I put on it... the first one snapped when I was trying to trim the excess tubing from up over the cat's eyes.

Yes, it would seem as though there was a joint US/UK exercise yesterday, huh? lol!
