Those suspenders/straps are indeed austrian ones, recycled from US M1944 suspenders. In the early days of the post WWII austrian army they used everything up they could get their hands on. US, British, Soviet and even French stuff was used and modified.

Interesting, that they have different furniture. Both hooks and buckles. And straps have no any re-sewing markings. I have compare them with US M44 suspenders. They looks same design, but materials different. Also, hooks have no markings at all (instead of US ones)Austrian suspenders? 16570511

So did they receive them with the leather straps on there from the United States or did they Modify them?

Thanks for the info. Do you have any idea why they would cut the canvas off and add the leather? When they would have worked just fine the way they were.

I have a pair of these suspenders that I bought in the USA 38 years ago and they were attached to a M-1944 US combat field pack, That had been upgraded to a m1945 by the US. The suspenders that I have have no Austrian markings at all on them.

Do you think they could have received them from the US with the leather already on there perhaps?

It would seem extremely unlikely that these were modified in the US.

I agree the apparent modification is puzzling, as it makes no functional difference to the item.

So, is it possible that the entire assembly was made in Austria (using scrap webbing and leather parts) for use with packs that were supplied by the US? The wide webbing straps, for instance, do not look as if they were once part of original M1944/45 suspenders.

This same process happened in Korea, where at some point they started to make their own suspenders for use with the US-supplied packs.

As mentioned before in the early days we used everything we got, modified and repaired when it had to be. We also modified US packs and german K98k bayonet scabbards to fit US webbing belts etc. Even made an unique leather adaptor for it etc.
