    Belgium assault vest 1988 OD

Post by Gemini on Wed Sep 21, 2011 7:45 pm

I do not even know if this is really Belgian. I bought it from uncle sams army navy surplus. It looks like some one cut the sleeves off and tailored it. The patch is a royal cannibal hunter...no. Just a patch I bought at Spencers. Can some one tell me if they really used a vest like this and what else would go with it?

What you have is a Belgian field jacket that has been modified into a sleeveless vest... Sturm (one of the big European surplus wholesalers) is notorious for doing this to certain surplus items in order to make them appealing to a larger customer base, rather than just surplus & militaria collectors. Personally, I hate seeing surplus kit mutilated into fashion items, but I'm not on Sturm's marketing team, so what I think doesn't really matter. Laughing

Although small, here is what the jacket would have looked like originally:

Yeah, there's lots of places like "uncle sams army navy surplus" that'll buy a container load of unknown condition stuff and make what $$$ they can out of it.

Up until 1997 (or there abouts) the only units in the Belgian Army that wore camouflage were the Para/Commandos and units deployed for UN missions. Everybody else wore a greenish field uniform, which this parka is a part of.

The National Museum of the Army in Brussels had a mannequin of a Belgian soldier of the German Occupational Force (BSD) in this kit, I'll see if I've got a pic of it to post...
