Orange day glow style SAS smock Empty Orange day glow style SAS smock

    Post by bravo_2_zero Wed Dec 21, 2011 7:34 pm

I just remembered something I'd like to share and ask with you.

When I the military we use to visit army surplus to buy Gucci combat kit. Anyways when on the travels we went to anchor surplus at ripley in Derbyshire which is the UK's largest surplus store, sells tanks and that.

The clothing hut had a wind proof SAS set hung from the roof and appeared to be a show item and not for sale. It was a 2 piece set in day glow style orange smock and trousers, reminded me of copter crew stuff with the colour.

Has anyone seen this stuff ?

Orange day glow style SAS smock Empty Day-Glo suit

Post by fourtycoats Wed Dec 21, 2011 7:46 pm

I have one of these suits. I have heard conflicting stories about it's origin, varying from mountain rescue to Raf Airfield. It is like a standard S95 suit in orange rip stop.

This would have been pre-ripstop period, cotton ventile stuff cos it was 93/94 period.

I don't think it was cadets wore cast off uniforms. They were still running about in the 84 patt stuff when last I looked a few years ago. The only kids who had s2000's is cos they bought them.

That is if your on about 12-18 year old cadets.

Tag reads SCRDE = stores and clothing research and development establishment ie. prototype. I'm guessing the orange colour is like Natick's use of slate grey.

I'm also guessing 413/93 is model number and year of production. This is nearly the s95 stuff with a few luxury additions like M65 style hood.

    Very cool!!

I know early S95 prototypes have red colored tags in them, but this orange monstrosity probably came before. The tags in it look Chinese. I'm surprised to see tags in this thing at all, so I don't know what to make of this.

fourtycoats, that shirt needs to be put out of its misery Very Happy

No mate on tags , remploy is a government backed place for disabled people to get back into work. So it's the UK equiverlent to STEPS.inc or Goodwill.

Bravo 2 zero is correct in what he has said about the SCRDE and REmploy on the labels. This suit gets worn every now and then, along with the lovely shirt. It makes an unmissable Range Officer outfit Very Happy
Another clue has been posted on the "flecktarn" thread about the origin of the shirt.

Could it be a Royal Navy issued deck suit. Something high visibility for flight operations?
