My guess is Bulgarian scout smock? But I've never seen a pattern like it.

Thanks for the input fellas, but I still have my doubts. The Bulgarian splinter smocks were made in the Soviet oversuit layout and were printed on a tan/khaki cloth. Also the Bulgarians used a rather consistent screen for the angular geometric shapes that had some familiar and repeating elements for many years. I'm not seeing any of those on this example...

my first feeling was also bulgarian, i think gilles has a couple of samples of bulgarian uniforms without the "rain" (but different patterns from this one) very neat item and certainly very hard to come by

    Then it's Bulgarian Smile

I've never seen anything like this, but it has all the hallmarks of being Bulgarian origin. Whether they used it or it was for hunting or export, who knows. At the moment I'd guess that it was intended as domestic hunting camouflage. But it could also be limited/experimental issue, though I tend to think not.

The seller claims that it was purchased from a government auction organized by the Ministry of Interior, so there's a chance it could have been some service item.

I wonder if the smock Gilles has carriers any stamps or markings. Let's hope he takes a peek inside this thread.

Even it's origins is a mistery it's a fine item nevertheless. It's from the photo or the body and the arms are different coloration? Pockets are open pockets to reach the ones in uniform? Sorry for the questions but that piece did rock my world Wink

I'm being told by a fairly knowledgeable collector of exclusively Bulgarian militaria that it is a WW2 piece issued since 1944 and used in post-war communist Bulgaria until the 1960s.

I am now doing trying to dig up some period photos.

I doubt this is a WW2 piece. It's of Soviet design and there's no way Bulgaria would have touched something like that with a 10m pole since they were Germany's sorta ally.

I also think it is early East German print as amebatarn. The cut is the same.We with Steve already discus this theme.May be used in Bulgaria but we used a lot of Warsaw Pact community stuff.

Very interesting piece! The "rainless" splinter pattern looks pretty cool, like an abstract art piece. Laughing

I'm not sure if I understand you correctly. Bulgaria made a whole slew of splinter designs straight after WW2, as a fresh Soviet ally no less. What makes you believe it is a Soviet-designed piece?

That's certainly possible, but has anyone ever even documented a DDR splinter pattern? Not even one of the most meticulous DDR collectors has any material suggesting its existence (if I recallm he has nearly one of every year of Blumentarn issued).

The cut is 100% Soviet cut, 0% German or domestic Bulgarian cut. Which means it definitely isn't from earlier than 1944. I doubt the Bulgarians were racing to make Soviet designs after their peace deal in 1944, and I doubt they made anything significantly different for the first few years after. So I think the chances of this being from the 1944-1947 timeframe are quite small. Maybe directly after this period, sure, but not until late 1940s.

Whatever it is, I think it is quite likely legitimate military issue and I want one Wink

Steve, you think this is a Soviet-patterned oversuit made by Bulgaria in the late 40s to 50s? The pattern is certainly not anything the Soviets would emulate.
