Interesting shirt. Is it common to wear so much insignia in the Mexican armed forces? I hardly know anything about Mexican stuff...

By the looks of the name tape and the rank it looks like a high ranking officer (General of the Brigade)? You'd expect them to wear more 'bling' and 'chest cheese' than the average joe ...

In the past I have seen some uniforms from "la escuela de paracaidismo" and... yes they are full of patches!

Hi, I just want to point out several irregularities with the uniform you see in the picture.
1.- This kind of camouflage was used in the Mexican Army in the late 70's and beginning early 80's, but the thing that strikes me as odd is the brand that you can see.

2.- The unit patch that you see in the right breast pocket is of the Escuela Superior de Guerra, which is the Mexican Command and General Staff COurse School, so it should not be in that place at all, since it should go on the left sleeve.

3.- The eppaulettes are of a Quartermaster Colonel (brown tab and three stars).

4.- The pins on the eppaulettes are of the CGP or Cuerpo de Guardias Presidenciales (Presidential Guards Corps, for all non-spanish speakers).

5.- Ranger tab??? In the Mexican Army we have some guys who have obtained this tab, but in this uniform, highly unlikely.

6.- The Aerotropas FAM (Airborne, Mexican Air Force shoulder patch) on the right sleeve was used in the Mexican Airborne Unit back in the 80's.

7.- The pins on the neck, pretty much like the ones on the eppaulettes, with the difference that the first ones are of an CGP Infantry Battaillon, and the ones on the neck have a CG or Cuartel General (Headquarter).

8.- Left shoulder patch or the 3 BFP or Batallón de Fusileros Paracaidistas (Airborne Riflemen Batallion), not longer in use since the 90's.

9.- Couple of jump wings over the right breastpocket, coud not make out thwe country of origin, probably one of the US.

10.- Senior Parachutist Jumpwings over left breast pocket, not longer ised in colour, since the 90's, nowdays they are subdued.

11.- Nametape with rank. First, it is not standard issue nametape and rank does not correspond with eppaulettes.

Hope that this clarifies some of the issues related to the uniform.
In case you don't believe me, I'm 20 year active duty Mexican Officer.

    Thanks for the detailed info.

The tag says "Cove 42" hecho en Mexico, not sure if the 42 refers to a size or is part of the brand name mfgr/tailor. Definately custom tailored for someone, maybe for holloween, I have no idea.

As far as it being correct or not, seeing as the name tape says "Bert Crotty" I've never felt it belonged to a Mexican national. Rank tabs were in the pockets along with what I think is a French or Belgain fourragere.

Thanks again, if you get a chance to ask around about a clothing manufacturer brand or tailor shop called "COVE" that might still be around that would be great.

COVE means Cooperativa de Vestuario y Equipo, the number 42 is the size. The COVE used to produce the uniforms of the Mexican Armed Forces up to 1980-something. Nowdays the equipment and uniforms are produced by the Dirección de Fabricas of the National Defense Secretariat (Secretaría de la Defensa Nacional).

By the way, what colour is the fourragere? If it is blue with a maroon circle, and the pins on the end have some sort of eagle eating a snake, then they are Mexican and would mean they belonged to a Staff Officer.

Thanks for the COVE info, that solves that riddle for me.

As far as the fourragere it does not fit that description, one of the French/Belgian ones for sure.

From a source in Mexico that dug around, While the uniform has some issues w/ the patch placement I am happy that the name seemed to pan out and now makes some sense. The slip on Col rank was in a pocket of the shirt when I got it.

"The name on the shirt Bert Crotty does not belong to any colonel that has ever served in the Mexican army, but there was a US military advisor by that last name that helped the Mexican military during the early days of the drug war in the infamous operation Condor. That’s about all I came up whith, hope this helps."

    "Notes on Operation Condor:

Operation Condor was a massive antidrug operation by 10,000 Mexican Army troops that swept the Golden Triangle area of Sinaloa, Chihuahua and Durango in search of marijuana and opium growers and traffickers.

The operation began in 1975 under pressure from the Nixon administration that had started the U.S. “war on drugs”. It is rumored that American advisors and DEA agents took part on the ground and American pilots took part in the spraying of defoliants.

The commander of the operation was General Jose Hernandez Toledo who had taken part in the student massacre in Mexico City’s Tlatelolco square in 1968.

Operation Condor was in fact an extension of Latin American cold war counterinsurgency warfare using tactics that had successfully liquidated a rural guerrilla movement named “El Partido de los Pobres” led by Genaro Vasquez and Lucio Cabañas in the state of Guerrero in the early 1970's.

The brutal repression used by the army in the Golden Triangle left a legacy of violence and hatred for authority that continues to this day. Although widely touted as being successful in reaching its objectives of destroying vast quantities of drugs, the operation was in fact a failure in that the flow of drugs into the U.S. was not stopped. Most of the traffickers were able to leave the region while the rural poor suffered most.

Operation Condor also had the unintended consequence of consolidating drug traffickers into the nucleuses of the large cartels that we see today."
