"SAS" smock

Here's a hardly used 1990's gaberdine smock, windproof. For some reason the hood and bottom hem drawcords have been removed. There is also a small compass pouch on the chest made from S95 material. Also has the obligatory green sniper tape over teh buttons. Partly to remove the shine and also to protect the thread.

It is the same age as some trousers i have and photos of which i will post tomorrow.

I was not aware that they used "SAS" on the labels ??

Nor was I until this smock showed up !

It came directly from Hereford and they don't need to buy their smocks. Yet......

Here the smock wrapped in its' own hood is sitting on the trousers.

SAS on the label .......I would be cutting that out if I were in the gang .

Couldn't agree more - its' crass beyond belief !

However, using said smock on ops and getting caught behind the lines is often enough of a giveaway as to who said soldiers belong to !

You might argue that getting caught with loads of Gucci gear all screaming SAS on it might lead captors to assume you are an airsift Walt and have gotten lost from your role play location and let you go on your way again !

Does anyone know what size SAS smock the NSN number 8415-99-132-3964 corresponds to please?

In answer to Andy's question ....

NSN's run from 8415-99-132-3951 NATO Size 5060/8590 to fit height 150 - 160cm and chest 82 - 88cm (the old Size 01) through to NSN 8415-99-132-3963 NATO Size 8090/1520 to fit height 180 - 190cm and chest 114 to 120cm (the old Size 9). There is an additional "Special" size listed with NSN 8415-99-132-3964......this suggests a size range from "04" through to "9" (plus "special")......."

That's the best i can do for now.

alas, it says you have a poncho so it can't be all perfect !
When i try the NSN for my smock above, it doesn't give me an answer ! Maybe because of the 'secret squirrel' nature of the kit ?

In JSP 586 Operationa; Clothing Catalogue NSN CAS 8415 99 132 3951 - 3964 is "PONCHO ,COMBAT.Woodland DPM.SAS only ,but Description is "Smock Combat SAS .Woodland Disruptive Pattern Marked.Cotton ,with Additional Information:"Not for general issue".

Incidentially, the Special Measures size cost twice as much as the other 13 sizes.

There was something on EBAY a couple of years ago about some guy selling fake smocks on there.

He did green ones and black ones which apparently were never issued.

Claimed they were 1970 0r 1980 issue but they had taped buttons.

And if I recall correctly the nsn on the green one came back to a dpm poncho too !

These are not only issued To SAS, I was issued matching trs and smock, identical to these from naval clothing stores in Nelson last year.

Indeed. That's why I always write "SAS". If even the Navy are getting them issued, they can hardly be "special" now , can they ?

How come you got them issued Fez ? NP148 ?

I was issued my first set when i was in Norway doing the ECW course with 3cdo brig. My last set was issued last year when i was joining FPGRM Psqd. The Navy are special in many ways

My point was more that I don't call them "SAS" windies. They are issued to pretty much all SF wich includes SAS, SBS, BTY148 FPGRM. Or at least were. I left in 1986 I gather from some mates that SAS & Shakey Boat generally wear very different dress these days
