Did Palladium make them in '54? Just curious.

The ranger boots are tip-top. =]

Hey Ed, a great pair of boots!

I have been looking for vintage Palladium boots for ages, but love my ranger jump boots! I was told they are 1956's issue but can tell for sure. Do you know how to date these?

Just noticed with the suede type Ranger boots that i have 2 slightly different types---

Not sure if it will make sense but the boot on the left is of the "Hi Leg" variety with the buckled gaiter added to the boot.

The boot at the right started off as an Ankle Boot and has had the gaiter is part of the extension turning it into a "Hi Leg"

Yes, it does make sense. Is there dating that explains this, or do you suppose that it was just a quirk in manufacturing?

There are various stamps on in both but cannot make them out.

Im only guessing here that the early boots were ankle boots so when they changed to the "hi leg" gaitered type they had surplus ankle boots so converted these??

Sounds reasonable. They're French, correct? I have seen pictures of FFL guys with ankle boots, Indochine & Algeria. Maybe when this thread goes "hot" there'll be an explanation. =]

The first double buckle boots issued to the french army were the US double buckle boot of WWII with a seperate cuff the french then copied them and came up with the pair on the right of your picture, they evolved into the pair on the left of the picture with only the flap of the cuff as a seperate peice, the design evolved from the brown to the black model with a brown leather lining, the latest evolution has not got the leather lining, but the design has remained more or less the same since the early 60's and is still recognisable as the classic French Ranger, one thought has crossed my mind will the French army follow the current trend that seems to be sweeping other armys and revert back to brown rangers

    Hi Gary
They look like the 70's version with the brown leather lining IMO the best of the Rangers, as long as there is no damage to the uppers and the leather sole that the rubber outer sole fixes onto they can be resoled, my local shoe shop charges me £30.00 for Vibram soles, I have been wearing one pair of mine for nearly 15 years and they are in good order, I just polish em regularly an give em a few days rest to dry every week or so and they will last me another 20 years. Probaly the most comfy combat boots I have ever worn and they were designed to last buggers just go on and on.

-----Gary or Loski, can you possibly send me a URL regarding where you find these? I understand that obtaining things in the US from France is not easy, but still... just the slightest bit light shed upon the subject would be greatly appreciated.

I, like you, would actually *wear* them.

Dan and Graham thanks for looking, I believe these are 60's/70's versions at least that's whet the seller informed me, the soles are well worn down at the back, but maybe I could get the soles replaced, I would want to keep the originals though ( cos I'm sad like that)!!

Dan I got these from French ebay, and cost me 8.00 Euros and 22.00 Euros for delivery, I'm not sure what the postage would be to the States, but I bought these for cheaper from france than I could get them over here, so it pays to go direct. If you are interested I can supply the seller name just PM me.

I also bought another Brown 60's pair today from France Ebay, all in 38.00 Euros, when they turn up I will show them here, and hopefully if all being well share that seller too,and again these have worked out cheaper , even including the 20 odd Euros for delivery, than over here, amazing as the closest part of France is like 26 miles away, thanks for your input guy's Wink

    Hi Gary
You might not get the same pattern of sole but there are several differant origanal patterns fitted on the rangers so you might get a match for one of them, Ja one pair of my black boots are the same as yours and I think they are the first black version but as I said IMO the best of all the Rangers if you can get a pair of the Smooth leather Rangers made for the Gendarmere they are lighter than the Army version with the pimpled leather USMC now UKMC used to stock Rangers a few years back had some Gendarmere rangers and I bought a pair but I lost them in a move they were the Rolls Royce of the rangers.
Dan try this link it's for ebay france and a load of rangers there

According to their website, that style of boot came around in 1947, and saw action with the French Foreign Legion in North Africa and elsewhere.

I have a pair of modern Palladiums that look like these (in black) that I wear as everyday shoes. They are very comfortable, and the canvas breathes well when it's hot; so far they've survived two summers of backpacking, rock climbing and fishing trips, and still have much wear left in them. A very good pair of shoes.

    --Oi, Graham!

I found some people in France who offer excellent prices and very good selection, and will ship to the US, via the link you posted. Getting set to order a pair right now.

I never even knew about the .fr option (in all fairness, it just doesn't come up at ebay.com, ever).

Couldn't have managed it without your help. Thanks very much!

And, Ben-- I had some of the shearling-lined Palladiums, back in the 1990's. Loved them-- and wore them to death. It was one of those things where, they were abundant at the time, and I figured I could always go out and get more. That was not the case. It was a special buy through a local gun store, where they picked up a tonne of stuff from France, then liquidated it all.

    Live & learn, right?

    Cheers!
