I Saw this ad' on Trident military's website..........

REPRODUCTION RHODESIAN CAMOUFLAGE - Reduced prices to make room
for the new shipment in January. The new shipment will be manufactured
on rollers exactly like the originals and will not be screen printed like the current stock.
We will have Pants, shorts,T-Shirts,short sleeve shirts,long sleeve shirts,flap caps
boonie hats,coveralls, and bush jackets in the new stock. These will be sized
and labeled exactly like the originals so it will be impossible to tell them apart
from the originals........

Why can't they make is so that repro's can be spotted by those with a little knowledge ? It'll be like WW2 German stuff and Tiger Stripe.

They will never get it right.
All the SS camouflage and tigers that have been repoped still look nothing like the real thing in feel.

I'd have to agree. The jury is still out until we can have an example in our hands to feel, inspect etc. The best Rhodie repros I have seen thus far have been out of Japan in the mid-80's - but you can still tell it from an original.

I also agree, though it does mean having to look more carefully. Some repro stuff is damned close and you either have to know what to look for or rely upon knowledgeable/scrupulous sellers to disclose what it is. If you're cruising eBay late at night, with tired eyes, you could make a mistake. Earlier this year I looked at a repro Spanish Rocks Amoeba set on eBay and didn't realize it was a repro because, until then, I hadn't seen one. But I didn't need one so I didn't bid. Some fool paid EUR 400+ for it. I got mine a month later for EUR 80

The REAL problem comes when the used sets start showing up. Some of the better SS repros (made in Germany), once washed and worn a bit, start to look pretty damned good in standard small sized eBay pics.

For the rare stuff I just usually go with the "if it looks new, it's probably a repro" approach. Rarely goes wrong

I would never think that gents as esteemed as yourself would ever get caught out but there are many who have not handled the real mccoy and might get fooled on visuals alone.

One problem is we don't get to see the eBay stuff in person to feel cloth, look at details of stitching, check for things not pictured, etc. Sometimes you can tell something's fake with a blindfold on as long as it's in your hands.

There's an excellent DDR Flächentarn para set (based on the 1963 model) that's out there. Touch it once and you know it's a reproduction even though most of the small details are correct. The good news is that the print colors don't look quite right, so I can usually tell it's a repro from the preview pic!

Most sellers (including me) only put a 1-2 pictures up. If the pictures are poor quality or low resolution it could be tough to tell the difference between a really good copy and the real thing. Fortunately, as Owen said already, there are few good copies out there

Hi Dave I wouldnt worry too much about Trident geting new stock of Rhodie camo they have had that notice up on their website for the best part of 2 years may be more and still dont have any

collecting is not just about buying on line.

One must build up a network and get second opinions on items.

However when one plays ebay secret squirlie one keeps auctions to ones self ....thus hurting the pocket book if wrong.

I've bought from Trident. No complaints, as what I received was properly battered, and was an item nobody would care to fake, (I don't believe), but... thanks for the head's up. I'd probably never bid on, or buy anything that called itself Rhodesian, only because I am too cheap to be serious, but this does worry even the casual collector. Although it is nothing like getting burned for real money-- it does suck when you think you found something cool at the second hand store, only to discover it is spurious.
