Soviet Bi Color Camo Winter Uniform

This is a Soviet Bi Color camouflage winter uniform that is dated 1991.

This pattern uniform is shown on page 115 of Dennis Desmond’s book “Camouflage Uniforms of the Soviet Union and Russia” and, according to Desmond, was issued only to army paratroopers and special operations personnel.

Construction of the jacket is the same as the standard Soviet winter jackets. There is a sewn-in felt liner in the jacket. 6 button front (there are no exposed buttons on the jacket). Button-down chest and lower cargo pockets. Velcro fastened pockets on each upper sleeve. Draw-string waist. There is a light-weight khaki colored hood that tucks into a pocket behind the collar on the jacket. Reinforced elbows. Epaulets. Button-down chest level pocket inside the jacket. Interior holster with lanyard that attaches to the pistol with a metal clip.



Pants: Button down cargo pockets at the side of each pant leg. Matching camo pattern suspenders that button in the back and attach to the front of the pants using metal d rings. High waist with button take-up tabs on each side. Drawstring pant cuffs.
There are button-in liners for the pants and jacket.







Here you can see at least 3 different color shade differences on the back of the collar.

Here is a photo of another Bi-Color jacket - you can see where scraps of VSR camo cloth were used for constructing the back of the collar.



Dennis Desmond says in his book, “Camouflage Uniforms of the Soviet Union and Russia”, that there is a summer version of the Soviet Bi-Color camo uniform. Desmond does not show a photo of a summer uniform in his book and I have never seen one in my years of collecting. I suspect that these were only manufactured as winter uniforms.

Besides Desmond’s book, photos of Russian soldiers wearing Bi-Color winter uniforms can be seen on page 210 of Carey Schofield’s book “Inside the Soviet Military” and on page 59 of Concord’s “Airborne Elite #1 – Russia’s Air Assault Force” (posted above by Gilles).

There are Bi-Color summer type uniforms but, they are not standard issue sets.

Here is a post about a non-standard Bi-Color uniform. I call it non-standard because the uniform is not constructed like any standard Soviet/Russian military uniform (patch pockets, exposed buttons, etc). These non-standard uniforms also do not have factory markings or stamps.

Yeah I missed out on Bi color winter cold weather sets! I did pick up a set of the VSR cold weather pattern heavy weight winter set. Believe mine is the schofield pattern camouflage. I did get a commercial set of the winter weight Flora pattern. The insulation or liner is inside the jacket & pants. Also have the Afghan tan cold weater set, it is super heavy weight and the only one that fits me. Bruce

I was in the right places at the right time

Soviet and Warsaw Pact stuff has a special place in my collector's heart. Unfortunately the kind of stuff I'm missing, like bicolor, tends to be quite pricey. Not to mention hard to find at any price. So I'm going to have to just be satisfied to live vicariously through others

Awesome thread. I got a Bi color set for relatively little money off a Berlin based dealer. Traded it for a "officer quality" TTsKO set in my ogre size. A decent trade :-D

That's beautiful! Looks like a "pink" variant without the third color. Printing mistake or deliberate? With the Soviets and Russians it is hard to tell sometimes

Looks like the collar button strap is 3 color.
