    Hi Guys.

I have some queries about this item, what era is from, and therefore what's it worth, if anything?

    Thanks in advance. Smile

Hard to say for sure, but this one like a repro. You can easily tell by the backing. If it is a coarse, white square weave then it's not legit. If it's nice and soft, no visible square weave (usually the backing is a grayish cloth) then you're good to go.

I often see used pairs (arc and shield) sell for EUR 1. Because they are no longer in service, and were sliced off of uniforms when surplussed, there's tons of these.

The trickier part is finding the right sized one for a particular garment. Over the years the BGS made more than a dozen variations in size, materials, etc.

That's a really early example of the green parka! It replaced the Sumpftarn parka around 1976. Difficult to find for any timeframe, but especially 1970s.

Unfortunately, those aren't the correct badges for that parka. Those are the larger types designed for the great coat, and they do look genuine. Even from these pictures I can see where the original badges once were. BGS usually removes the original ones when they put their items out for surplus sale. Or at least used to. Now a days there's no point because the badging has changed.

Here's the patches and rank you need for this parka. Note that the rank has wider straps than the types used in the 1960s:

    Bundesgrenzshutz patch IMG_5680

Here's how they are positioned on the flap, as well as a comparison of the various sizes/types used over the years starting in the early 1960s (earlier types used different style badges):

If you open the flap you'll likely see signs of where the original stitching was. Positioning of badges on BGS parkas and field jackets is quite consistent.

    -->@_@

    Wow.

    I don't doubt what you're saying for a second.

This parka came to me via a US Ranger who'd gotten it from a German contact, about ten years ago. Basically, it sat in a box for a long time until Gary asked about his patch. I'm not going to say that I am surprised that it was put-together... but I'm really surprised that it was put together. Wink

I probably won't take it apart, and reassemble it, I've never actually done that (I have at least 3 sets of trousers that I want to have altered, but I still haven't done it-- I am *lazy*).

It is just weird to see how people modify things, for one reason or another.

Back into the box it goes...

    Brilliant info Steve,many thanks.

I can confirm this one has a grey material backing, and was never attached to a garment. But still not 100% on it's originality.

I am amazed there are repro's out there, but then why not, there's repros of just about everything, sadly I own quite a few, but was totally unaware on purchase.

Thanks again mate, I appreciate you sharing your knowledge Wink

D, very impressed with your BGS Parka Cool

Shame it's patches are not correct to the garment, but this does not detract from how cool it is.

Again Steve, your collection/knowledge on this subject is most informative Wink

I would be surprised if I haven't seen this before Very Happy STURM, or some other wholesaler, sold off a lot of BGS stuff many years go. They had access to mountains of badges, so they paid someone to stitch them on. Sportsmans Guide was selling the standard service jacket (which uses the same badges as you have, I forgot to mention) and I wound up with one for some reason. Think of it as some extra "bling" to get a higher price. The service jackets, for example, probably cost less per piece than the badges!!

I probably won't take it apart, and reassemble it, I've never actually done that (I have at least 3 sets of trousers that I want to have altered, but I still haven't done it-- I am *lazy*).

And getting these things on correctly is a pain in the arse on top of that. Especially on other things, like the Einsatzjacke ("action jacket") where the badges were sewn onto a small zippered arm pocket BEFORE being assembled onto the sleeve. Means you have to remove the pocket, then stitch on the badges, then put the pocket back on the sleeve. Ugh.

Back into the box it goes...

It's a great parka and probably worth a little more to a BGS collector than a later model. Especially because the arm pocket went away not too long after yours was made.

Excellent! It's always hard to tell from the front side, but the edging looked a little wider than normal. Some of the repros are like that.

I am amazed there are repro's out there, but then why not, there's repros of just about everything, sadly I own quite a few, but was totally unaware on purchase.

I bought a repro badge set in 1993 or 1994 to go on a BGS great coat. At the time the badges were not available on the market and of course there was no eBay. I don't know why someone reproduced them, but at least the conditions for it make sense. Now they are on eBay by the hand full any day of the week. Usually used, so yours is a better find for those looking to badge up a new item (which also has the badges removed more often than not).

I am always happy to share obscure knowledge of obscure topics Very Happy
