Norwegian flag on military clothing Empty Norwegian flag on military clothing

    Post by mk209 Sun Dec 16, 2012 5:24 pm

I'm sure this has been mentioned before but can somebody tell me why the Norwegian flag on military clothing is reversed (upside down) on the shoulder. All my items have the flag this way. When viewed by somebody else the flag is reversed but when the wearer looks at it it's correct.

    Matt.

This issue has been discussed in Norwegian forums several times and there are a few different theories. I believe the one that is correct is that the flag is pointed in the same direction as if you had the flag on a pole and walked forward (of course on a day without wind). Then the two smaller fields will point forward, I hope you know what I mean

Same idea as on the reversed US shoulder insignia/flags, as to make the flag looking as going forwards with the wearer?

@ NorBn, on a similar note; all my flagged Norwegian jackets has their national flag on the right side shoulder, where at least most other nations has theirs on the left shoulder (except the Germans who has flags to both shoulders), is there a practical reason for this, please?

You are spot on, Saltefanden. Just couldn't find the right words.

Earlier the flag was on the left shoulder, so you can find M51 and early M75 field jackets with the flad on the left shoulder. At one point it was decided to wear the flag on the right shoulder, but I don't really know the reason for this.

I have checked some of my photo albums and I'll say that there was a change around the time the M98 was introduced, so maybe the answer lays there?
