--Just grabbed up a slouch hat that doesn't fit me (but the price was irresistible). The band declares that it was "Made by Ayrefield, Melbourne," and then it gives a date of "19~~."
Yeah, the squiggles are how it looks. It could be 1957, or it could be 1966. Impossible to tell-- though I know for sure it isn't from the 1940's, because whatever the date is, it uses curved numerals, and nothing angular, likesay... a "4".
I'll post pictures if this thread generates responses, but my BIG question is; has anybody ever heard of "Ayrefield" before? Google fails. They're constantly trying to show me airfields in Melbourne, and assume I simply cannot spell.
Compared to a Mountcastle, the felt of this hat is buttery, and soft-- delightful, really. It has the feel of a WWII-era hat. The puggaree is also softer than a current issue, but folded tighter (and considerably less clean). Overall, there's precious little to go on, as far as the manufacturer is concerned. I know that it came from Australia, and that is all.
Anybody know about these?
