Good point Rich, I personally think these spectra's are very interesting from a French combat helmet evolutionary point of view, and if you look into these in more detail, they evolved into a Cannuck lid too!!

I am very keen on adding one of these to my collection, but I am not keen to get a second mortgage to finance one

Nice Helmet but Im not too keen on the Fritz (coal scuttle) shape helmets I prefer the Isreali M201 or M404 shape shell more of the traditional Brit shape. Still a nice find and not too common

Graham, it always amazes me how our forefathers thought an enemy wearing these shape helmets, and then 67 years later most of the modern world adopts this shape of combat helmet...a strange world we live in

I have a soft spot for these German shaped helmets and was very tempted to start a collection of them as I already have a couple but thought against it as there are too many dammn variations from various different countries so would never end.

I think that the worlds armys adoption of the Coal scuttle helmets is one of the bigest turnrounds in military history
Before the US adopted the fritz helmet moast militarys wore M1 or M1 clones Britan being one of the few that went their own way. mind you anything would have been an improvement on the MK5.

Good points made,practically all of the post war Euro countries adopted the M1 shape, clever part on the US to de-Nazify the occupied countries, and of course to encourage any nations not to go down the Commie route, we of course stuck to the old Mk-5, dire shape, stupidly unstable in usage, and looked bloody stupid in profile!!

Im not bad buggered my ankle but im on leave so it could be worse yeh the Mk5 with the press stud in the top it drilled a hole in the top of your head when you ran I was once asked by an Amarican soldier why we British squaddies prefered to wear our berets whenever we could so I told him Regimental pride and the handed him my Mk5 and said to him run 50 yds in in this that is your other reason.

I thought it was because of the idea of equip NATO troops with standard equipment to diferenciate them from WP forces

West Germany continued to use the old Fritz helmet until near 60's. 10+ years after war ended. What were they trying to de-Nazify if in the land Nazism was bourne people keep watching their para-military forces parading like this

Very salient points made Albano, my opinions are based on my own personal sardonic feelings regarding the evolution of European helmet development from US influences, rather than a socio-historical point of view.

Of course you are quite correct in stating that the Cold war had a massive impact on Military resources.
