Collectors generally think of Polish Splinter fitting into one of two sub-types: Gray and Yellow. The Yellow tends to have an overall yellow or mustard look, even when extremely faded. The Gray tends to have an overall grayish look with a near neutral background color when really washed out. It appears the original background color used to be a lighter mustard yellow, but not the same as the Yellow variant. For Gray variants the purple colored shapes tend to jump right out, whereas with the Yellow the shape colors don't usually show themselves as well. From examples I've seen the two are printed on different types of cloth, with Yellow being a tighter weave and Gray being a thicker traditional weave.

There are quite major variations in colors because of production run and wear/wash, so it can sometimes be hard to tell which is which when you're holding one on its own. But if you look at things side by side, it becomes much clearer.

These are awesome pieces! Some very rare bits in a very interesting pattern. But I have a question:

Why do the hooded smocks like Gilles posted seem so huge? Is there a reason they're cut so generously?

They look like they'd fit someone who's incredibly large-chested, but very, very short in stature. scratch

    Nice pic!

Danilo's side by side shots underscore the difficulty in categorizing the colors.

My personal belief is that what he has are the two variants. It is possible the cloth type has a lot to do with it.

Type 1 = poplin type cloth. Starts out with mustard background with olive green large shapes and purple/red small shapes. After wash/wear it continues to hold onto it's yellow base.

Type 2 = soft cotton weave type cloth. Starts out with mustard background with light green large shapes and purple/blue small shapes. After wash/wear the mustard color diminishes, often to the point of being completely gone. Green gets lighter, purple/blue gets more purple or more blue. Since unissued examples are hard to find, these washed out "gray" examples are common.

On top of these two types are the usual production variations of colors.

If I have some time I'll take some pics of my 3 pieces. I have Type 2 trousers that are near unissued and so you can see where the colors more-or-less started compared to the well used top I have.

The concealment these types of uniforms provide is two-fold: the disruptive camouflage printed on the uniform, as well distorting the human silhouette into something that is not readily identifiable by our brains. Kind of like the philosophy behind the Israeli helmet covers.

Details from an unissued face mask version. The Soviet-style sniper coverall that Gilles showed seems to be the most rare of the bunch.

Very nice mustard variant! Yes, the mask is near impossible to find. Good for you!

The other one looks like civilian manufactured from surplus stocks, not a modified original.
