Early 6 Color Desert example Empty Early 6 Color Desert example

Post by CollectinSteve Sat Nov 01, 2014 1:47 am

I bought this set recently for the badging (I love the Sinai stuff!), though I suspect the flag at least is not right.  Anyway, much to my surprise the uniform itself is rather special.  The top and bottom appear to have come from the same soldier.  The jacket is dated 1981 and the trousers are from Defense Personnel Support Center with special contract number.  Can anybody tell me anything about this set?

I was always under the impression the earliest 6 color samples ever were 79...

So last night i got 2 a lot earlier sets..
    First the
Special forces, Airborne set... 1977 dates, very similar cut as your except for i believe different fabric and pants have buttons and loops inside to fit a liner.

The 2nd set is mint and a LOT earlier.. 72 dated on older tag configuration
I heard that natik did early trials of choc chip, but i've never seeing a sample until now and had no idea they were this early...
Jacket has same cut as post vietnam war bdu's, but pants have different pocket flaps that reminds me of the 50's winter pants, but also in a different configuration...

Best of all both sets came off same collection and i have very credible information that was used by early delta force troops...  in any case is a very neat find.

I've never seen the matching trousers for the 1977 coat. That's really neat! So both were set up to have button in liners. Makes sense given how cold it gets at night.

Your second set is even more interesting. 1972 is the earliest I've seen of the "RDF" (Transitional) cut.

I found this source of info:

yes very interesting... i think this is the early naticks trials... where it all started!

What is the earliest desert only issued camouflage pattern you guys know off? I keep thinking of the egyptian sand, but it wasn't issued purely as a desert uniform, it was a double sided pattern and the rocks side was usually meant to be the "main" side...
