Curing Mildew from uniform? Empty Curing Mildew from uniform?

    Post by Mercenary25 Tue Jan 19, 2010 8:46 pm

I recently got a DCU and found out that it has bad mildew problem. Stains are all over. Anybody has experience with it?

I'm considering to have it professionally cleaned.

Honestly....there isn't a whole lot you can do for a uniform that already has mildew/mold stains. You can wash it again to make sure the mold/mildew is killed. However...the stains are likely to be permanent. Sorry.

If you haven't done this yet, you need to buy yourself a decent dehumidifier. They aren't cheap...but are the best friend for uniform collectors. I have two that I run almost continually throughout the year. This REALLY cuts down on the moisture which is what mildew/mold needs to grow. Also, buy yourself a humidity gauge at Wal-Mart (about $10). They measure the amount of humidity in a room and show it on a digital display. Worth every penny IMHO.

I will 2nd what Arch has said, I have bought 2 dehumidifiers for the basement. They run about $150 in Lowes or Walmart. BUT they take the water & the smell out of the air. I had a night desert parka with "mold & fungus" growing on it, I laundered it up, while it is "clean" the stains are still visible and they damaged the coloring of the parka in the areas it was growing. I made the mistake of it touching the floor....but I have learned alot from good old Arch..I will run down & take a few photos of the damage left behind....it did alot of damage to some bookcases & vintage books I had. Hence why I went & bought hydraulic cement to seal the cracks in the floor where the house has settled over the 40 years it has been here.

so it is far better to shell out the dollars for a dehumidifier than to have stuff looking like this...

My basement has that problem but my dad used dehumidifier so it's fine but I don't keep my collection there.

I keep my stuff in my room where condition is pretty much perfect for collection. My dad calls me monk because I always keep my room dark, draped over windows to keep light away from my collection. Anyway, back to the point, I recently got nice 173rd DCU but sadly it is damaged by mildew. You can see it in my bragging rights thread.

I'm still looking for 173rd DCU that is problem free. Smile

Bond007a1, your parka isn't that bad compared to my 173rd DCU! Former owner found it outside in paintball field when somebody used it for paintball game but left it there. That DCU condition shows that it's been out for more than 2 days.

I'll have to double check, but I think dry cleaning will take it out after it's already dead. The problem with this, if it even works, is the expense.

I asked dry cleaning place to see if they could get rid of stains. I'll see. If they can, it would be worth it because it's 173rd. Wink

I have a soft spot for the 173rd since my dad served in it (and the 82nd) in the early 1960s. I have his OG shirt, fully badged, hanging in my collection. Unfortunately I wore it a lot when I was younger so the neck is a bit threadbare!
