I've heard quite a few stories of some amazing finds just by digging, this thread is to share any stories (personal, second hand etc) and the stuff that was found.

    I'll start:

I went into my back woods once and just randomly decided to dig, I found a bunch of rocks that looked like arrowheads (all of them had sharp points at the ends and were triangular in shape).

I once found a plastic army man in the sand at a beach

That's about it, I have a metal detector at home, may try to figure out how to use it this summer and do some hunting. Cool

My dad and I used to metal detect private property around some Civil War battlefields. We've dug Perryville, Kentucky and Farmville, Virginia. Found shell fragments, minie balls, personal equipment, etc. Even have found some original percussion caps. Those are VERY fragile and normally don't survive intact.

Before my dad's health got bad, we used to hunt arrowheads at various Native American sites in our area. Matter of fact, my dad wrote a thesis on an area wel excavated in Carter County, Kentucky.

Old tin soldiers from my yard in Iowa. Land used to have a ditch that was used for dumping in the early 1900s. Found all sorts of cool (but broken) knick knacks. And a lot of broken glass (proof by scars on the hands).

Arrowheads once I got older and stationed in Kansas.
