This smock has been issued.no labels but the colour and style of buttons are the same as on a RADAR SAS Smock of mine.

Was told a long while back that this was the SOP for Paratroopers on active duty(or something similar).
Have another Para Smock that has a white rectangle sewn to the outside of the collar but no numbers on it(unless faded/washed out)

Gary,i would estimate that over the last 20 years or so 10-15 para smocks have passed through my hands and only ever seen it on 2.
Not sure when it was implemented(is it still??) or if they were removed prior to selling?
Wish i knew an ex Para(or possibly a serving one) to get the low down on this.

Although not a Para some of us used a small white patch on the underside of the collar. On a patrol in the dark the collar could be turned up to show the white patch which made it easier for the guy behind to follow you through the woods.
Others had fancy luminous patches on a band round their helmet
