Given that my local camping/surplus store is the closest one to the barracks where our latest rotation to Afghanistan kicked off from, I'm hoping that by some sheer stroke of luck a set of new Australian Multicam will turn up there in the not too distant future!

'Good things come to those that wait' as the saying goes ... I didn't scramble to obtain the DPNU uniform when it first came out as going prices were well beyond my reach. However, yesterday I checked out a local camping/surplus store in the CBD and couldn't believe my eyes when I spotted this on the shelf. I did look high and low for the matching hat but am pretty confident it wasn't present.

Thanks Martin, that would be appreciated. I think I might have a white ensign (swapped for at AASAM) but that's about it. I know the other RAN badges come up from time to time on EBay but I guess the biggest thing is what to do about the nameplate.

What a great urban camo !! What ? Navy you say ? Huh ? Can the reflective strips be reasonably eaily removed for a wartime situation ? Otherwise, why wear camo when orange uniforms would be safer ?

The reflective strips are sewn in. I agree that orange uniforms would make more sense but it seems that service specific camouflage is all the rage - not necesarily for camouflage purposes but to engender a sense of unit/service pride. More practically our Air Force have adopted standard Army camouflage as their working dress service wide - they have not bothered pushing for their own version of Auscam .... yet!

This is the best, and most reasonable explanation I've heard for any of the rather quixotic and/or oxymoronic uniform-patterns that are out there. (Chinese Fireman's Camo being the absolute pinnacle).
When I still worked with the military, and when the US NWU was still in trials, an officer told me that the pattern was ostensibly chosen to hide oil stains, and other fouling that was likely to happen aboard ship. If that were true, I think that a more organic version, such as this one, would be more appropriate. I can't remember the last time I managed to get pixels of paint on me...
