Were the magazine pouches normally worn in pairs? Most photos that I have seen seem to show just one magazine pouch. Perhaps non-infantry types did not wear pairs.

With regard to this first generation DPM gear, does anyone know the purpose of the small cylindrical bags (they exist in both desert and woodland - see my desert example below). Also, I have wondered about the purpose of the female fastex buckles on the front of the vest?

Very nice under documented subject matter. I have the vest in both woodland and desert, but I only got some of the woodland pouches. Now I want to look for the rest!

BTW, I was moving around a box yesterday and found all my 1950s/1960s Dutch stuff. It all came from one veteran as the names match on several pieces. I've not seen good documentation on what the Dutch wore during this time period. I know for sure I'm missing a canteen, but maybe I'm missing something else as well.

    Steve,

Check my plunjebaal thread - it has most of the PSU items circa 1950s-80s (I still have more to post there). I have researched the matter in some depth, and can fill in the blanks. But basically everything is based on the M58 and/or M78 uniforms. Actually, the M58 outerwear continued in service with the new M78 fatigues. The M. Talens book is the master work on this stuff I would say.

Regarding the first generation DPM vest (often referred to as the "bokketuig"), most of the woodland pieces are widely available. Desert pieces are a little tougher, although I think I have most of them except for the rifle magazine pouches and holster.

    Thanks Jeva,

Is it meant to clip on to the female buckles on the front of the bokketuig? And what is the connection to Ronny Tober?

Very cool! Where is that last picture taken? Somalia? Pictures in actions always help demonstrate the historical importance of items!

Also, What is the relationship with Canada and the Netherlands? They both seem to share a lot of equipment...

We just have to assume that the Dutch make wise procurement choices when it comes to rifles and respirators! Very Happy

About the Ronny Tober thing, apparently it was a folk-singer that made some songs that were popular with some soldiers, and the bag was then coined after him because they both had a "bloated" round appearance.

At least that's what a guy that used it told me
