Do you know what this piece of equipment was called and/or what it was used for?

It appears to have been intended to carry something quite heavy.

It has a semicylindrical shape, is open at the top (no flap/cover), is about 16 in (41 cm) tall, and about 9 in (23 cm) wide.  It has 2 L-straps (cross-strap buckles in front), 2 large cushions on the back, a plate (red piece in photo below) at the bottom (and another sewn into the back), and 3 metal studs on the bottom.

    Markings are:  A.B.L.   A.M.S.  1955

Carries an insulated food flask, photos to follow.

Food container liner is Stainless Steel so not Glass as a Thermos, but serves same function. keeps cold food cold or hot food hot.

Push down button in centre of lid is to let air in since cooling food causes air to contract, causing a vacuum, making it difficult to get the lid off without letting air in.

No problem,  I asked the same question as you years ago on here when I only had the carrier, and did not know what it carried.

I learned what it was on here.

The Flask turned up a while after, so I bought it to complete the kit....

    We all learn by asking.....

I now use the carrier and flask to take my pork pies, Scotch eggs, and chocolate bars to shows in the summer to keep them cool....

Well then Mike, you're putting it to some very good use!

I bought the carrier on eBay a few years ago to carry my bagpipes on hikes.

I don't do much hiking these days, so I thought I'd try and sell the carrier (but I figured I'd better find out what it was first).
