Personally, I liked to buck convention and wore my ones lots.

They were universally known in my day as 'Caps, DILAC' DILAC standing for "Don't I Look A C**t" (in this cap)

Still have one early DPM toned one in my attic -somewhere. I also have several large sized olive green Norwegian ones on which the DILAC was based. They are exactly the same bar colour. I can post a photo or two later tonight if anyone is interested ....? The late Sir Julian Moore wore one during the Falklands War (as he did a Norwegian small pack - another nice piece of old skool kit too ...). Made him instantly recognisable to the troops.

I guess the British "crap hat" is going to be one of those "would like to have, but is elusive as the unicorn" items for me.

To confirm my suspicions, the British "crap hat" has no cardboard in it (the bill isn't stiffened), right?

It had cardboard in the old issue ones and that is why used ones have that destroyed peak that looks thicker than it is long.

The Norwegian ones have some kind of rubber as a peak stiffener and their peaks will never degrade.

So the British "crap hat" does come with a stiff bill, but cardboard or something is used as the stiffener, which dissolves after a couple of washings, right?


That's what I like the most about them - the floppy bill.

It was my dads mate's who gave it me, he was ex-SBS.

I love them,have a couple of unissued and a couple of used with mashed up peaks.

It is the one I was issued when i started my basic training in the early 80's and I managed to keep hold of it at the end of basic training Im not sure of the date but there is no MSN No,
I removed the neck flap in the late 80's and belive it or not I found the flap tucked away in a drawer a few months back.

back then I was 6ft 3in tall with a 36in waist quite the racing snake, waist has expanded a bit over the years, Not REME but Royal Hampshire Regt.
the cap didnt get sweaty cos when I joined up I took a crap hat with me from my ACF days and used that one keeping my issue cap as it was newer, Its been washed a few times over the years too, im amazed its still in such good nick

There is also a Dutch Marines version in dpm .

I am sitting reading this with my new Norwegian Army OG crow cap on very happy ,
Never seen a UK one in OG I was issued a DPM one at Depot POW Div 1983 that we had to hand in when we were posted, looks like large sizes may of been getting hard to get then maybe??

I do have a new issue one with the later DPM plus the inner is a lot differnt .
