RARE 63 Pattern DPM Windproof Smock.

Another rare item from my collection a 63 Pattern DPM Windproof Smock-these are by far rarer than even the WW2 Camo Windproof Smocks

Why do you think that these are rarer than the WW2 windproofs?

They were issued in very very limited quantities and for only a short period of time(not sure exactly how long).

Put it this way,WW2 cammo windproofs arent exactly plentifull but they do appear quite regularly for sale on Ebay and other places-I can honestly say that in the last 15 years or so ive only ever seen 2 of these for sale-this being one of them

Cannot remember which forum but there was a debate as to if there were specific trs made/issued to go with the 63 patt smock and if so what they were.

Are they labelled at all-if so any chance of a pic please?

Also why the question as to the rarity of the smocks-please dont tell me you have more than one in your collection

Very nice smock,and I would consider them to be very desirable to DPM collectors, rare or not..

Of course I have several of these in my collection .....yeah right, I wish!!!

I tried to photograph the label but it is so faded that I can not get the image.See below

The label is hand written in pale green ink and under a very bright light, I can make out the Following
Trousers Windproof
Size 4
F Fryer and Co Ltd.
The cut is identical to the WW2 windproofs with one front leg pocket and a draw cord waist. I only have one jacket in my possesion but I remember choosing it from a pile of these 63 windproofs on the floor of a surplus stock in King Street in Manchester some years ago.

I agree... I've had two complete sets and spare trousers (three pieces of which were unissued, I think) of WW 2 Windproofs. I've seen them up on eBay every now and again. But until now I've never heard of the 1963 windproof!! Nice!

I saw this, saying these are rare....ive been in contact with at least a couple of these in the Cadet forces. They get issued out to cadets all the time. We've mostly gotten rid of these (they were always rare though) and are now trying to get rid of tropical and falkland issue stuff which people get given. anyway, long story short: Ive personally thrown away one of these, and have instructed cadets to replace theirs, and the unit who recieve it usually get rid of them, trying to filter everything out. I have only seen one pair of trousers, which we threw straight out (we dont use them.).

Anyway...ill make a note to keep the next one I see..

Well...in cadets all sorts turns up. WW2 stuff has come through, my first issue combats came with officer stripes and military police TRFs. We use old stuff, I mean, why have it if you dont use it? Korean war issue stretchers, falklands stuff all over the shop, some pretty ancient water bottles and mess kit...is it ever worth keeping any of it? Theres still loads of cadets with smocks with shoulder epaullepes (Ive been told some of them are falklands, anyone got any ideas?). Thing is, my little unit always throws it out (stops confusion when issuing uniform), but some of the bigger units still operate 50s and 60s era radio equipment and have PILES of old uniform. I helped throw out a big box of those smocks with shoulder eps'...

Just simply LOVE IT!!! Both Smock & Trousers!!! Great, great items!

Yes - keep it and drop a note on this forum with some pics. At worst you will know what it is and at best you may have a buyer for it!

Smocks with shoulder epps are likely 68 Pattern. Heavy, lined, well made. Again there are plenty of folks (me included) on this forum who collect this stuff..
