Cant say I know, however my godfather served in the Forces from '55 up until the 80s and hes a wealth of knowledge on any kit inbetween those eras. I will be going to visit him later today and I will get back to you on that if he knows.

I do believe the extras are to button the collar open. On my shirts this seems to work.
