The first DPM garment.

I've pinched the photos off ebay but since there was no mention of copyright, I hope this is ok.

This is a jacket / smock I first became aware of back in the early 1980's. I saw one at the Beltring War & Peace show a couple of years back for £25. Not my personal cup of tea so i passed on it.

It is, as far as I am aware, the first garment made in DPM material and was done in the mid 1960's. Unless anyone knows better / more.

Very similar to a Denison in pocket layout and metal zipper with no external flap. I imagine the untidy hood stowage didn't go down well with RSM's and those who believed combat clothing should also be good for the parade ground !

Did anyone here win this ? It went for £145.

The black shapes look odd at the side of regular DPM, they almost look brown with black over the top.

I've often wondered if something came before the P60 model. Something usually always comes before a widespread production run.

It looks like the Brits were trying to continue on with the German's WW2 (and early BW) experimentation with "blending" colors because of it's superior qualities up close or while in motion. But it seems until Multicam nobody really felt they got it right, or at least it wasn't worth pursuing further. Germans abandoned it in 1950s and never picked it up again when they started trying out new patterns in 1976. The Swiss adopted one of the German patterns (Leibermuster), but not the "blending" effect. So this is really, really interesting to see the Brits were fooling around with it in the 1960s. It puts this pattern in it's own category.

Almost looks like its based on an American garment , the m51 parka with external pockets. It's the shot of the back that makes me think this. The p60's were also influenced on American designs.

More like an AM smock ..mixed with a RN type.

Aha, so Steve got it. I know him. A very serious Brit collector indeed. He's doing a book on Brit kit WW2 to Falklands I think.
That explains a lot. He'll photograph it for the book and it will appear on eBay again when the book is finished.

Woollen cuffs you recon original to the garment or added 3rd party ? They look too good to be original ones given the age and wear on the cloth.

I know the jacket had knit cuffs originally and reckon those are the original ones.

These garments were trialled in 1963. And as Steve rightly points out, this has a pattern distinct from the DPM used on the '66 pattern SAS wind proofs which were made in the WW2 cut and which seem to appear in the early 1970's. The P60 in DPM only made their first appearance in 1969 AFAIK. Since those two garments were made in a different DPM to the one I have pictured I would say this one predates the other two.

I've never heard of a P60 wind proof though so maybe this is an earlier garment that I've not come across. Anyone got any piccies of it ?

I think the '63 patt SAS windproofs are dated '63 in name only and weren't made until the early 70's . They are definately the later DPM pattern to the jacket above. I think the '63' refers simply to the addition of a full length zipper at manufacture rather than as a post manufactured mod as was done to the WW2 windproofs and not to the date of manufacture.

My olive '63 patt windy is dated 1966 on the label.

Now about this P60 windproof .......

No I am talking about a no zip version .
