A Gift... from the Royal Marines Empty A Gift... from the Royal Marines

--Picked this up for a song this weekend. Not the sort of thing I would usually even notice (it was, in fact, my wife who handed it to me), this ended up being much more interesting than I would have anticipated: (apologies for the bad lighting, I snapped the photo in a rush before heading out to work)

A Gift... from the Royal Marines 8112795300_85c3786088_b

It is an illustration of a Royal Marine Officer in full dress from 1805. The matting bears a dedication:

    "Presented by Major-General P.L. Spurgeon
    Commander Training Group Royal Marines
    October 1978"

(I know there should be commas, but none are used in the actual dedication).

The reverse has a printed precis of the Royal Marines pasted onto it.

I thought that it was quite possible that some of you might know a thing or two about the Major-General. Google offers little intel.

    Any anecdotes?
