Do you know what this piece of equipment was called and/or what it was used for?
It appears to have been intended to carry something quite heavy.
It has a semicylindrical shape, is open at the top (no flap/cover), is about 16 in (41 cm) tall, and about 9 in (23 cm) wide. It has 2 L-straps (cross-strap buckles in front), 2 large cushions on the back, a plate (red piece in photo below) at the bottom (and another sewn into the back), and 3 metal studs on the bottom.
Markings are: A.B.L. A.M.S. 1955
