Heres a video on a rare British SF snow vest, used by the SAS.
During the Cold War, the security of the northern flank of NATO was reliant on the defence of Northern Norway. When the Iron Curtain still stood reconnaissance, surveillance, and harassing raids, would have been the main activities of Special Forces deployed to there to stop the Russian Advance.
The vest is an interesting design, it has its load carrying areas on the front and back leaving the sides free. Also the two side adjusting straps are low down. This is so the vest will not restrict arm movement when using skis.
The general conditions in Arctic Norway mean that a large amount of kit has to be carried even when not carrying their bergens. This vest design has been an attempt to balance the load weight between the front, and the back pack which is intended to carry the basic essentials.
