I'm new to non-US militaria and I think this is an Australian Boonie hat. Is it? Also what is the correct name for this and what is the camo pattern called? Thanks, Scott

Re: 1991 Boonie Hat
We call it a 'bush hat' although I very rarely have heard it referred to as a 'giggle hat'. The pattern is 'Auscam' - short for AUStralian CAMouflage. In the mid-90's these were gradually replaced by a larger brimmed bush hat (which is sometimes referred to as a 'boonie' to make things more complicated) and were unpopular in that, although they afforded better sun protection, the hat could not easily be stored in the pants pocket and the brim would eventually sag down at the sides. The earlier 'bush hat' of which you have an example here were jealously guarded by those who still had them so that they didn't look like 'noobs'.
