Bergen royal marines? Empty Bergen royal marines?

    Post by british-rat Fri Dec 14, 2012 9:30 pm

Hello. The wide range of backpacks that paraded through the islands, my favorite is this:
    Bergen royal marines? BERGENROYALMARINES1982
    Bergen royal marines? BERGENROYALMARINES19823
    Bergen royal marines? BERGENROYALMARINES19827

It is called "body rucksack arctic" and is a huge junk. However, its imposing frame, does not match the capacity of the bag. Apparently other experimental or first-element in the conflict. Was attributed to royal marines for visual evidence but, in a documentary, I could see a welsh guard with one of these. So what is the specific body of marines arctic rucksack? Does the conflict continued to use after? I think not. regards

The upper cross bar of the frame is screwed in, if removed the Bergen can be sling lower on the frame bringing the whole thing up above webbing height. That left the side bars sticking up but they could be cut down. It reduced the carry potential but made it much more useable, it could be purchased like that from SASS in Lancaster. Ten million times better than the 58 pattern large pack.

By "body rucksack arctic", they mean the body of the "Rucksack Arctic", as opposed to the other components (frame, support straps, loop straps, shoulder straps). Your example is in beautiful condition.

Thanks for this Falklands pic. I'm researching the Berghaus influence and so far have only seen pics of marines using THIS particular rucksack during Operation Corporate. I've read in many places that marines were issued the SAS/Para Rucksack - but I've never seen a single pic to confirm this. I've long believed that marines used Berghaus rucksacks during this operation - but again have not yet seen a single picture to verify this.

There's a version with a neatly cut-down frame and this was often sold as the "SBS Canoe Bergen". Thanks Jame K, I didn't know that that was a SASS modification. Comparing the frames, they have the SAME NSN and it was this that made me realise that it was not an official item. It was terrible because the frame struts bash into your spine because they're not at the height they were designed to be at.

I've managed to source the main pack, waist belt and shoulder straps but for the life of me can't track down a frame to complete it.
