Post by Easy Gee Sun Apr 14, 2013 9:23 am

    Hi All.

Does anyone know when these caps were introduced on the Market, this one I have been informed is dated 1988.
Were these originally made from surplus Lizard pattern cloth, this one is made of Poly/Cotton HBT??

Many thanks for your input pedro, I read somewhere these were produced from French HBT lizard print cloth originally, this one is obviously commercial.

    Interesting post.

I have a few of these.  Have had them a long time and cannot remember where they came from.

Thanks for looking Sal, I got this cap from a French dealer,I knew it was commercial at the time, but thought it was a "stopgap" until I can source an original.

I would like to see yours for comparison!

I got my first one back in the early 1990s along with a set I used for paintball. Made from the same poly/cotton cloth as the uniform. My hat just has a tag with a size on it, nothing more. Well made too.

Thanks for your input Steve, I agree they are well made, I would like to find an original one day ( I'm sure others would agree) but as before a good stopgap!

    Cheers,Gary.

    Lizard Pattern F1 Cap Dscn0629

The size and manufacturer's name data is stamped on the Bigeard cap.

The F1 caps are identical to the cap posted by Easy Gee, but obviously the label is different.   I acquired them around '86..

Found 4, all in different sizes, and no identifying data on any label. Also included a legit Bigeard cap, and a TAP 47/56 hood.Lizard Pattern F1 Cap Dscn0622

VERY NICE, well worth the wait Sal. Great to see the examples of these commercial caps you own, seems there are more than one manufacturer too, which I find interesting!

I love the Bigeard, and that hood would look very nice sat on one of my Tap lids...envious you bet Cool Cool Cool

Thanks for adding to this mate, much appreciated;)

You are more than welcome Gary.

The " commercial " caps must have been produced by many different makers.

Have seen Asian copies, beside the European copies.  They are all well made,  simple , and fairly comfortable .

I could have sworn I had some commercial Bigeard caps somewhere, but have not found them, if they even existed.  Had not bothered to look  too closely at the one I posted , and assumed it  was commercial .

Not until recently did I find that it is legit.    The hood is a recent acquisition and matches the Israeli TAP  reissue  perfectly .

    All Lizard is cool....

Yeah, those commercial sets are STILL being made. I've had probably a half dozen come through my hands in the last 20 years and they are amazingly consistent in terms of the print, the cloth, the tailoring, etc.

Classic pattern, decent cut, well made, reasonably durable, AND relatively  cheap !!!   Not too shabby...A great uniform that should have  also been made in a lightweight cotton

My only beef : weight of it's fabric. ( which  obviously contributes to its durability ).

Have wore  out more than one pair of trousers .
