Belts worn with trousers in B.A.

I have a question regarding belts worn with trousers in the British Army in the 1970s and 80s. Was there on issue any sort of belt to be worn with trousers only? What was worn by the soldiers back then to keep their trews on their arse and what was most common thing? 58 pattern webbing belt? My father was serving late 70's early 80's and recalls only ever wearing 58 pattern belts on his trousers, that may have been a regimental thing though. I think those horrible plastic working belts came in towards the latter end of the 80's/early 90's but i may be wrong.

I was issued one of these plastic working dress belt in 1980 as an army cadet and again in 1985 as a member of the regular army.
