Splittertarn parachute pack Empty Splittertarn parachute pack

Just when I thought there was nothing else interesting for me to add to my Bundeswehr collection, along came this apparent one-of-a-kind item! It is a 1956 dated BW parachute pack made out of Splittertarn cloth. For sure it was factory made and was used. Currently it is packed and ready to go. The parachute itself is white silk.

There are two labels on it, both seem to have the same info. One is on the strap and is badly faded, the other is on the inside flap covering the place where the chute deploys from. The ink has faded with time so I enhanced the text of the better of the two labels.

Cost a small fortune to get this one and have it delivered, but what was I to do... turn it down? HELL NO Smile

Parachute confirmed to be an emergency pilot chute. Another advanced collector I know has one made a year later by the same company. Not only is his label more readable, but his chute is in Amoebatarn!!

Hot damn, that's a grail and a half! Amazing find!
I appreciate the Luftwaffe's concern for pilot safety and concealment by issuing them a camouflage parachute.
I wonder if they'd get a parachute color based on their primary station.
When my dad was stationed in W. Germany in the late 70's/early 80's, most Luftwaffe pilots and aircrews on training and defense stations he saw had orange fliegerkombi, combat pilots however got feldgrau ones.
Now to find a photo of one of those reserves being worn!
