Re: THE HELMET THREAD
Yeah, I'm pretty sure it's not too common any more. At least not for line infantry. Stuff stuck into a band or into the foliage holes, yes, but not a dedicated scrim. The only country I know of that makes wide use of them (but maybe not any more??) is France. They use a plastic cut cover instead of the fancy Ghille type in your pic.

Re: THE HELMET THREAD
We still use them, light infantry open country, we are slowly going away from it, usually when mounted.
They are made from all sorts, sandbags, sweat rags, cut up uniforms usually Auscam ones too lol.

Re: THE HELMET THREAD
I believe there were orders forbidding the scrimming of the new British MK7 helmets(or at least in some units).

Re: THE HELMET THREAD
Interesting topic re: scrim on helmets.
I am aware of the Aussie usage of the French style Salade cover, for the M61, but never seen any ref pics of them in actual use.
That bleaching technique is a new one on me, but it looks pretty cool, and effective too!!
RMC wear scrim on their Mk7 lids in Afghanistan, that I do know.

Re: THE HELMET THREAD
Was on some official MOD site a high ranking officer sent out memos forbidding anything other than the issue cover to be used on the MK7 helmets,of course as to if people adhere to this is another thing
Will have a look if I have bookmarked the site/article.

Re: THE HELMET THREAD
superb gary its great seeing more of your great collection ,im really impressed with your work ,job well done ,here's my latest pickup a soviet tankie helmet , and manufactured in the same year as my good self , 1972 the quality of the original is very apparent over the czech version and probably the same for the other soviet block versions ,generally its well made ,heavier and of a better build quality compared to my other version ,ive done some camparison shots for referance ,i wonder how the throat microphones worked in the field ,did they just pickup the voice vibrations ,my czech version is dated 1991 [IMG]Easy Gee wrote:Czech lid ,with Czech hood, whatcha reckon, I'm quite pleased with the outcome of this put together mini project!

Re: THE HELMET THREAD
Hiya James, Thanks for looking mate.
The Hungarian model is the plastic model,I have no idea what type of paint it is,but it's very shiny, quite thick, and reminds me of the kind of plastic coated garden furniture type stuff!!
Yeah The Czech lid with hood turned out ok,and it was a breeze to fit, no jiggery pokery like other hoods I have covered lids with!!
Loving the Tankie helmets Mate, visually they look the same, I guess like a lot of things you have to have them in the hand to tell the difference, regarding the mic, I have no ideas I'm afraid, they look great on display together though!
Good to hear form you mate

Fantastic James I am well impressed with the Czech 53 and accessories, I know you mentioned before about the gogglers, I did not realise how cool they were with the sun visor on top of them, and the camo cover is outstanding...nice one mate

Re: THE HELMET THREAD
Guys this Gendarmerie lid, was a former M56 Tap, converted to Gendarmerie use. Other than that, it's very blue, and very shiny, and err Blue, and I love it

Re: THE HELMET THREAD
Seen loads of those Gendarmerie helmets going cheap over the years and never taken much notice of them to be honest but after looking at the interior webbing etc I wonder if this could be French?-had it many years and have never been able to ID it.

Could this solve the mystery of my South African M87 helmet with a choc chip cover???
Granted,my cover is a US made one and not a UAE made one.

Re: THE HELMET THREAD
Certainly has many French attributes Mate, looks like a Spectra shape with French style Riddle suspension cool lid mate.
I previously knew UAE used SA lids, so this could explain all.

Thanks Gary, had it for quite a few years but never been able to get a positive ID to it.
The shell is a laminated material, sort of like the WW2 M1 helmet liners but much thicker/stronger.
