Vietnam era SPH-4 Helmet Empty Vietnam era SPH-4 Helmet

    Post by 1stDivVet Sat Jun 06, 2009 6:21 pm

Got this baby today. Came with the carrying case and manual dated 69. Needs a new visor cover, but for $50 I ain't gonna complain!!! This is the one I've been wanting. A good, Nam era chopper pilot's helmet to go with a grouping I had. Very happy I didn't pass this one up.

    In the bag:

    Vietnam era SPH-4 Helmet PICT0017
    Vietnam era SPH-4 Helmet PICT0015
    Vietnam era SPH-4 Helmet PICT0011

    The helmet:

    Vietnam era SPH-4 Helmet PICT0006
    Vietnam era SPH-4 Helmet PICT0008
    Vietnam era SPH-4 Helmet PICT0007-1

    The manual:

    Vietnam era SPH-4 Helmet PICT0009

    Enjoy!!

    Fins...

Thanks guys.. The only thing wrong with it is the visor cover is cracked at the bottom and it's been painted flat black. I will probably leave it black as it doesn't look bad and I know they could modify and paint thier helmets to some extent. This one was done by the last owner. He was going to paint it to match his bike. It did come with the jack mods to use with CB/radio and stereos for the earphones and mic. That's pretty expensive on it's own.

Nice one ....I've been after one of these for a long time now....

They normally go for mega bucks, especially on this side of the pond, so that is an excellent purchase....I'm kind of envious Wink

Thanks for sharing this little beauty cheers

    Post by 1stDivVet Sun Jul 11, 2010 4:31 pm

Thanks guys!! I had wanted one to finish my chopper crew uniform and just couldn't find one I liked or that wasn't updated or missing stuff.. This one sorta fell outta the woodwork.. It's getting re-painted this summer at some point back to olive drab. I haven't decided if I want to get a new visor shield or just repair the old one.. It does effect use of the visor as it sticks or pulls thru, but since I don't actually use it, it's not really a big deal. I'm pretty sure I can glue it and "weld' a piece of plastic to re-inforce the piece that broke. Either way, I'm really pleased with it even as is. I'd rather have paid less, but who doesn't like militaria REAL cheap or free?? LOL

Never seen a manual. When they issued my helmet I just got handed the helmet.
Could be there is one in the sealed boxed helmet I have, but I'm not breaking the tape to find out!!!

Really nice SPH-4 and for that price an absolute steal. I was going to add that Cobra crews often painted their helmets black too. Not always an indicator but sometimes there is enough to make the connection. I realize he did it to match his motorcycle but it's still mega cool looking like that. In the 70s I remember bikers riding around with these from time to time including my dad.
