Cypriot Lizard and Sandstone Patterns Empty Cypriot Lizard and Sandstone Patterns

Post by TennoHeikaNate Sat Jan 28, 2017 9:37 am

Couple of Cypriot patterns I found:

Lizard BDU. Very simple pattern, mistook it for the Cape Verde lizard when I first saw it.

And this unique one I call "Sandstone" based on the colors and since it doesn't have a name, or at least not one I've heard.
Issued to the Cyprus National Guard. Made in China (PRC on the tag). Both BDU's are very similar to the Greek ones in construction and quality.
This one has the Cypriot coat of arms/national crest in the pattern.

Very cool. Not patterns that are often seen.

There appears to be two basic patterns with some sub variants:

    1. Lizard
1a. brown based (made by JET)
    1b. Greek pattern

    2. Woodland
    2a. without emblem in pattern
    2b. with emblem

I've only had a few of each in my hand and I can say that there is a fair amount of variation in colors.

Here's a picture of my fully badged Woodland (with emblem) uniform. It is used with significant fading, but far better than some of the totally washed out pieces I've had.

Very nice uniform Steve! I can't tell if it's my monitor but it looks like the stone-grayish color on yours is almost lavender colored.
The insignia is amazing as well, I love seeing foreign patches, especially with different alphabets.
I retook some photos including a comparison of my Cypriot lizard versus my Greek one.

I can see variations mostly in the stone-gray color, with some like mine being more grayish and others like yours are almost lavender.
Haven't had any luck finding the air force blue variant unfortunately.

great pictures and nice camo variants ... I like it a lot ...
Any hint on sources where to get some of this camo (especially the sandstone one) is much appreciated.
    Thank you.

Sorry for the VERY late reply @Alex, but sadly there never seems to be a good source for Cypriot camo.
Being in Europe you'll probably have a better chance at finding more than I, the odd UK seller seems to happen across some from time to time but very rarely.
Awhile ago I came upon a Cypriot lizard M65 style field jacket with sewn-in pile lining, and a pair of lizard BDU trousers.
The trousers have a single exposed button rear pocket as opposed to the Greek's more faithful US BDU copy ones.

The company that made yours is a Greek company that also makes Greek issue stuff

Some more examples of the Cypriot sandstone pattern!
First, an earlier production coat, made in either Greece or Cyprus.
It has black buttons, pleated and clipped edge pockets, and does not have the coat of arms in the pattern print, which according to one article came in around 2012.
    https://www.joint-forces.com/kit-camo/56551-cyprus-national-guard-4-colour-emblem-camouflage
It's patched to a SYOP (Contracted) "Lochias" (Sgt.), who was a crewmember of one of the CNG's six TOR-M1's.

A later ripstop BDU cut coat, made in the PRC with the coat of arms in the pattern, patched to an Infantry SYOP Sgt. with a National Guard tape and School of Combat patch.

    The older vs later patterns:

An unissued pair of the later ripstop BDU trousers:

And the field jacket. Very much like an M65, with button-in liner (missing from this one) and rollaway zipper hood (also cut out of this one).
But with some strange M51-like features like the point collar, button cuffs and pockets. The cuff straps are also sewn facing the same way instead of being symmetrical.

And all my current examples together, showing the pattern color differences:

There seems to have been an ACU cut model at some point, maybe only for SF or a private purchase thing.
Recent photos seem to show this pattern has largely been replaced by a Multicam copy.

On my wishlist is some of their sandstone camo copy of the Greek M-1971 webbing, but I've never seen any for sale or in collections.
It's likely still being used by conscripts and reservists:

I really like this pattern, even though it was difficult to get matching sets in the same cloth runs in good condition. They seem to wear these until they can't be worn any longer, then they wear them just a bit more!
