Andrew, I was thinking the same thing If the material is a bit like wool, then for sure it's Spanish. As for the size, perhaps a machete or some sort of specialized engineer's tool?

I have a couple like this that are made of the same light green cotton fabric used on other Spanish field gear. I don't think this one uses the woolen type material.

Must be my eyes So what do you think it's for? The Spanish have a wide range of parade specific gear, so I was thinking maybe something for flag poles, swords, etc?

It is a mystery to me. It may simply be for a bayonet scabbard, but I have never been able to find one in a period photograph.

Its larger than most bayonet frogs and it splays OUT at the bottom, rather than tapering in...
