"Munitions de Surete" means "Munitions of safety" in French...so im assuming French, and it would have held Blanks I would guess

They have a casing and primer like a regular round, but no bullet, it just goes "BANG"

oh... we called it "empty bullet" here, used for saluting ceremonial. (army cemetery ceremony, for example)

I can see it says BALL that wouldn't be for blank but for live rounds, definitely of the French variety though I believe Wink

Maybe its a reused ammo can that held ball at one time, then was used for training and repainted to show that it was full of blanks. Still trying to think of something else that would be "Safety Ammunition"

It says “55.6 X 45” and “BALL SS109” and this is the standard NATO ammunition these days, so I think this is a box for live ammunition. If you search "SS109" on the Internet you will get a better explanation than I’m able to give

Yep Blank would say so ie Blank, Ball is live, then you could have tracer too.

I think that SS109 is the standard ammunition, if it was tracer or armored piercing ammunition it would have another number.

Hmm..it looks like it might have been painted later than the side...I still stick with my idea earlier...but hey, I have been wrong MANY times before. I just cant think up anything else that "Safety Munitions" would mean.

Thanks for posting this up Arie, this has been pretty interesting
