I remember spending hours bulling those damned DMS toecaps to a mirror finish - actually I also recall it being therapeudic!. The trick was getting a nice enough sheen onto the pebbled sections!

The Brit's have had a number of different 'Hi Leg' boots. The ones which came out in the 1980's had a different cut and no speed lacing. Even before those there was a special 'Northern Ireland' version (with softer soles for bitumen patrolling?).

Yep,you definitely need a pair of the old hi legs-the type issued after the DMS and before the Assault Boots you have pictured.

I recall the then new hileg boots with the zigzag pattern tread or boots cardboard I was Issued with 2 pairs when I started basic training I must admit they gave me no problems but members of my platoon had to be issued DMS and putees as the hilegs buggered their lower legs up

The thing I remember most was the sillouhette of someone in boots, DMS and puttees and '68 pattern trousers. Very distinctive. And when combat jackets and smocks were worn tight and short and your olive lightweights had creases sewn into them. And you carried a proper gat - a 'long' (SLR). Them were the days.

Time spent bulling was always theraputic as it was the only time in Basic when you weren't being chased by your corporal !
