Re: Old camouflage
Hi Gilles,
Excellent M65!!
I'm glad you wound up with this jacket. Mike was quite proud of this one and I think it is nice that it is in a good home now where it is appreciated.

Re: Old camouflage
Very nice, but I have my doubts about the second one. These pebbled German-style buttons were used to create a Waffen-SS replica, and the tailoring is not standard Egyptian.
I like your blog! Your photos are almost of a professional quality.

Re: Old camouflage
Just noticed that the last uniform pictured above has buttons which attempt to blend the prevailing colours of the uniform.
Very cool. Looks like they were tinkering with manufacturing. Might be a more recent thing. Any idea what period that set came from?

Now how on Earth did so many of these weird cuts arise on this fabric?

Thanks for showing them ..

Re: Old camouflage
I found this odd cut of Egyptian "rocks" pattern, I believe it was made for a Palestnian militant faction. I can almost swear I saw an el-Fatah militant wearing an Egyptian pattern tailored this way.

Re: Old camouflage
This set followed me home recently. The pockets appear original to the jacket, but there are no buttons or button holes for them. Likewise, the rear pockets on the trousers have no buttons or button holes.

Re: Old camouflage
Nice set! Looks like a custom job that never went into service. There's lots of variations of these uniforms, though I think this is the first time I've seen pleated pockets. That must have cost a bit more, so maybe a senior officer?

Re: Old camouflage
Yes, could be. There doesn't seem to be much of any wear, except around the front trouser pockets.

Re: Old camouflage
Custom tailored stuff from Egypt is common. When you think of the abundance of cheap backroom tailors it makes such things viable in a way that is not in the Western world. I've had 3 or 4 sets in this pattern and only one of them was made in a factory. When the tailored uniforms are made they are almost always non reversible with Rocks side out, Desert side in.
There is also the possibility that someone was trying to make a fake 3rd Reich item. See FobanX's 2nd set where someone clearly tried for that. Yours also has 4 pockets, which is another point of curiosity since the normal is 2 chest pockets only. Unless it's a field jacket, in which case it would likely be in US M65 style.

Re: Old camouflage
Yes, the fake TR angle also crossed my mind, but if so, they went to a lot of trouble making the jacket from scratch and then not finishing the pocket flaps with button holes. (There is not trace that the jacket had been modified from an earlier pattern).

Some more evidence of what seems extensive PLO/El-Fatah usage of this pattern.

It is a puzzle because no matter what the jacket was not finished. I can't see this having been ready for an Egyptian officer any more than it is ready for the collector's market.
Thanks for the follow up pic, Raff!

Re: Old camouflage
Nice to see the variety of colors in one place. That first one is the most interesting one I've ever seen. It's almost totally red, with very little signs of the other colors. Where as one of your other ones has strong colors, the dominant color looking to be almost black instead of green.
Thanks!
Steve
Thanks!
