As a long time DDR collector, I have noticed the odd standard helmet that has be re-painted grey over the usual dark green. Other collectors I have spoken to have also noticed this. From several photos I have seen in DDR-related publications, I have noticed that navy personnel seem to be wearing grey helmets, but who knows about cheap magazine photo quality. I probably have 3 or 4 grey painted helmets in my collection, and the grey re-paints are old work (not done recently). Can anyone confirm these were Kreigmarine issue? ... Or any other info?

I also have one or two helmets that have been painted over in a lighter grey. I suspected Volksmarine based on period photos, but have no way to say for sure.

I think if it's the lighter color navy haze grey like used on navy ships, then it has a good chance on being used by German navy, it's common for sailors to use the same paint in the ship's repair locker used for maintenance to repaint helmets to protect from rust & corrosion.
if it's the darker slate grey or more of grey stone color , it's probably for regular ground troops.

Ive recently bought another M56(why on earth as aI already have 2???)and this one has been crudely painted a darkish grey gloss which in parts has scratched away to reveal a light grey paint underneath.
